The Loon Page is designed to give you an overview of loons (also known as "divers" outside of North America) through photos and audio recordings.   It will present this fascinating species in their winter and breeding habitats, explain in general terms key aspects of their biology and ecology, describe conservation issues affecting the species, and even provide the opportunity for you to listen to various vocalizations of a few loon species, and to learn about each vocalization.  In the future, a few additional video clips will likely be added, too.

BioDiversity Research Institute has developed, refined, and is expanding their continenet-wide loon biomonitoring program, to include other piscivorous species as well.  Much of what is known today about loon biology, ecology and environmental factors affecting their survival, as well as legislative directions toward protection of their habitats, are direct results of the extensive and comprehensive efforts of BRI.  As someone partnering closely with BRI on their projects, I urge you to take a few moments to visit their website to learn more about loons, about the fascinating new areas of research being developed and their application, and about how you can help us keep up the work.   Lend BioDiversity Research Institute your support, and spread the word.

It is my intention to ensure that you locate the information about loons you may need.  Please let me know if you have specific questions about loons or need to be directed to a source of information that may provide you with what you need to know.

I have provided a current list of loon conservation organizations.  Please be sure to contact, communicate with, and support them.

Click hereto watch a short video clip of a common loon taking off in flight at North Twin Lake, Ferry County, WA, on the Colville Indian Reservation.  Sadly, the nest at that location has been abandoned since 2001, but South Twin Lake continues to be occupied each summer by a breeding pair. The video clip is 977 kB, and plays on Windows Media Player, Quicktime, or Real Player. (click on name of player if you need to download one).  Video courtesy of Peter Otto ©1995 Arch Rock Entertainment.
