The Game of Life

Life applet:

The game of life is a 2-dimensional cellular automaton, originally created by John Horton Conway. Each cell is considered to be dead or alive. A cell remains alive if two or three of its neighbors are alive. Otherwise, it dies. A dead cell comes back to life if it has exactly three neighbors. Some interesting patterns develop, and eventually, the overall pattern will be repeated in a steady-state or cycle.

For the Java applet, I created a separate thread to calculate the new pattern, while the original thread draws the pattern.
