Here and there...
DK is currently working on the Hawaii Kai temporary skate facility, which will include: 4ft tall x 20ft wide mini-ramp, 6ft tall x 24ft wide mini-ramp, and a hip'd elbow shaped 7ft mega-mini bowl.  This project is a parks and recreation/city carpenter project; as of this past thursday (26 Oct), I visited the site of construction of the 4' mini in Pearl City which was structurally sound...although larger transitions were used and made 16' wide instead of 20'....all looks well.  To my understanding...  the city carpenters in town have under taken the 6' tall mini and bowl sections.  DK designed the structure.... hopefully they can build it.....and then they will come. (7 Dec) Yesterday I visited the Koko Head Dist. Park, where the Parks and Rec were leveling off the 4 foot Mini.  Maybe this is the first step of the process...maybe this is all Hawaii Kai gets?? Not too sure since not even the Parks and Rec can not figure out if the "Facility" is making the 6 foot Mini or even the bowl.  Anyway, the 4 foot is 16 wide (should have been 20') and 8 foot trannys' (should have been 6.5'), but all in all it's well constructed. (Especially since these are city carpenters and not skateboarders or ever built one before)..Anyway,...hats off to the Parks and Rec for completing the 4 foot mini....now lets find out who the "ghost" facility is so the project can be complete!  By the way...if this is it...where did all those "ordered materials and budget go???!!!!!" Give a call to Parks and Rec ASAP!
Oahu Parks and Rec Skate Facility Plan (1-3yr)
At the last parks and rec meeting (Oct 3), the agenda consisted of review of the Kailua, Aala, Mililani, and North Shore skate facilities.  Mind you this is our opinion..take it for what it's worth (over 35 years combined skating and building): Kailua...good to go....shares both interests of old school and new school i.e. bowl combinations, snake run, ledges, pryamids, hips, banks and transitions.  Aala...if you like ledges....you'll love Aala....not much flow...but alot of "one hit wonders".
Mililani...hmmm...a little bit of controversy....so far this is the third plan I've seen....large 8ft obstacles at one end that flow into 2/3ft and 4ft pryamids with a ton of banks... then into a 6ft U-shape bowl and 2.5ft deep dish....not much flow unless you like to go back and forth.  DK has a version of what we think Mililani should of had....  but sources say that the Design & Construction (Parks & Rec) and the landscape architects are too far behind to change what's been drawn.   North Shore.(click to link to design)....even though a conceptual design...it's headed into the right direction....street course..snake run...and peanut bowl.  By the way two facilities are under design...Haleiwa and Banzai.  After all the displays...Hawaii Kai people discussed the temp faciltiy and the permanent facility location pro's and con's.  (My opinon, they'll prob end up with the best one....afterall they'll have all the other parks to learn from...mistakes in design etc...it's a shame we have to learn who we should listen too).  By the way..Maikiki is open now !!!  (watch out for crowds!)....small...tight...no flow but a few "one hit wonders", but "it's there"....... (Nov19) By the way...word of mouth has it that Aala Park design is complete and has gone to bid, but the Mililani and North Shore are still in "design controversy", if they don't make the Nov 00 cut off, the money will be gone for another year. If you live in those districts...give a call to the Parks and Rec, your district manager, or county representative...heck..CALL THE MAYOR! As of (7 Dec) it looks like N.Shore made the cut off with options in design.  Mililani....not too sure...but even if they made it, the design was already controversial..and according to the designer/architect it couldn't be modified. Experienced skaters should be hired to help build, design and consult on skate parks... as in the same way experienced golfers design and consult to build golf courses!  Quote:  Talk is cheap...unless it cost $300,000 then we all suffer, and SOMETHING is not better than NOTHING!
Wuttssaaap!
If you missed the show on the northshore this past weekend (Thanks Hawaiian Surf, Volcom, and all the sponsors)  Here's a few pics of what went on.....
