Gift of Reckoning

This is a work of fiction, interwoven with an emphasis on the incarceration of America's aviators during the Vietnam conflict. It is a yarn conceivably within the realm of possibility, and is of a work whose catalyst was admiration for our country's Prisoners of War, enduring incomprehensible cruelties with courage and honor for that was Their Code.

And for a change, the horror of the torture and barbarism practiced within the walls of the Hanoi Hilton were to be seen by the entire world - - the picture at the left is the start of the Infamous March through downtown Hanoi in July 1966 when the city's civilian population were afforded the opportunity to inflict their measure of inhumanity upon defenseless American POWs.

And what of the war, "steered" by the president and his staff, particularly the Secretary of Defense, whose forte was the crunching of numbers in the belief power and might would win the war of attrition. And of the Secretary of State who would have bestowed upon him the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in bringing about a peace paid for and delivered with the retention of a number of American POWs in the Indo China countries - - - yes, theirs was the Nobel Peace Prize and for our heroes, their permanent presence on the Vietnam Memorial Wall.

To his amazement upon return from captivity, the nation he valiantly served never prosecuted those Americans whose presence and treasonable actions in North Vietnam paralleled that of "Tokyo Rose" or "Axis Sally," during the second world war. On the contrary adulation for their "other" lives was bestowed time and again with nary a thought of their treason. Here's one such heroine at her North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun station - - - AND THEY DON'T CALL THIS TREASON ?

Hate and revenge are proven motivators provoking the will to survive, something the novel's principal character, Robert Stone, an F-100 pilot fostered.

And thus was conceived in the mind of our principal character, a "Gift," indeed a long overdue "Gift of Reckoning." And the "HUNTED" one such American who humiliated her country before the world with lack of conscience and continued to do so!

Retired after 35-years as an engineer for an aircraft company, David Llorente was a participant in the F-86, Hound Dog Missile, Apollo and Space Shuttle programs. Of some significant distinction he was North American Aviation's Sr. Project Engineer on the last two Apollo missions to fly to the moon - - Apollos 16 and 17, though that period of accomplishment could never replace the years spent as a NAA technical representative on the F-86s - - great company, great airplane, and great friends, many of which were to be sacrificed needlessly. Ah for those yesterdays when we were young!
