IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR GREAT POWERS OF THE UNITED PROVINCES OF THE NETHERLANDS

I(1), Samuel Louis de Watteville, burgess of the town of Berne, Major and Captain of a company in the Swiss regiment of Major General de Gunroens(2), hereby(3) certify that the named Pierre Bonzon, born in Pompaples, Bailiwick of Romainmotier, Canton of Berne, has served faithfully in my company in the capacity of sentry for 25 months, always having good conduct and fulfilling his duties in peace as in war, as is proper of a brave and courageous soldier, so that I and his other superior officers are very satisfied with his work; but, as it was the will of Their Great Powers to dismiss the said regiment, I hereby(4) grant him his absolute discharge with this certificate of good conduct, after having wholly satisfied him of his pay and of his balance, with which he claimed to be content. I beseech everyone(5) to let the said Pierre Bonzon come and go freely without permitting anyone to harm or hinder him, but on the contrary to furnish him in case of need all possible aid and assistance. In testimony whereof I have signed the present discharge and affixed my seal of arms at Bergen op Zoom(6) the 30th of April, 1796.
