Clicker
Clicker training is a new method for positive re-enforced training. You simply click and treat.

Pup-Peroni is the treat I reward Jake with. It has no wheat and is good for using as little training tid-bits.

Sit, Stay, Down and Come
Come
*Have your dog sit and stay. Back up about 10 feet. Say "Come!" with a
loud happy voice and hold out a treat or favorite toy. If your dog doesn't
come, then use your helper again. Have your helper gently push your dog
toward you because once your dog is on his feet he will most likely want
to move. Another thing that will help is a long leash. Clip it to his collar.
Nicely tug a little. When he comes, praise and treat him. Repeat this
lesson until you can call him from anywhere, when he's not expecting it.
Stay
*Have your helper put a leash on him and sit him down. Have your helper bend behind
your pooch and hold him. Stand in front of your dog. Tell him to stay, while gestering
with your hand (hold an open hand near his nose). Back up about a foot. Make sure
your helper doesn't let him come with you. Return to your dog and praise with an
enthusiastic voice and lots of treats. Do this a few more times. Now back up one more
foot. If he gets up than come back and sit him back down and start back to the first
step. Once you can get 6 feet from him (this should take a few days), than try it
without the helper. If he gets up, then use your helper again - until he is comfortable
Do this until you can turn your back on him and walk out of the room and come back a
few minutes later with your dog still sitting there. Good luck!
Down
*Start with a treat. Bend Down to your dog's level. Have him sit. Hold the treat
while moving it down, to touch the floor. Gently push down his withers
(shoulders). Tell him the down command. Repeat and be patient!!!!
*Puppies have shorter attention spans than older dogs. If you have a
puppy, than keep training lessons shorter. Start with 5 minutes up to 3
times a day. Then progress into 10 minute periods. When he is older you
can train up to 30 minutes or until his attention is focused elsewhere.
Sit
Sit is easy, so you should start with that first. Kneel next to your dog and gently push down his rump, while bringing the treat closer to his nose. Reward and praise for each success.

Jake's Grooming Tips

How to start Cutting Nails
Cutting your dogs nails is very important. You should start getting your puppy use to it early. At first have him sit or stand on a table or something else. Pick up his paw and massage it and touch it, but not in a harmful or scary way. All the time your doing that, praise him in a high and happy voice. He will start to get use to him touching his feet. When he is then get the clippers. Put his nail in the cutter, but do not cut. Do this for every nail. Don't forget the dewclaws, if they were not removed. Always remember to praise and reward.

Cutting Nails
First, you need to know how much nail you can cut. There is a nerve in your dogs nail, that if cut will cause bleeding and pain. It is called the quick. In light colored nails it is very easy to see the quick. In black or dark colored nails, then try seeing it with a flashlight. It is better in dark colored nails to just trim them every week then cut off a lot and accidently cut the quick. If you do cut him, then sprinkle a pinch of septic powder were the bleeding is. Remember to praise and reward. Don't forget the dewclaws.
