JUDY BRINGS YOU  HITTY
From  the  book  Hitty, Her  First  Hundred  Years

Since 1984 this  artist has been creating her own sweet- faced version of the original wood doll  named  Hitty

In 1983 a friend introduced Judy to a delightful story about a little  wooden doll, whose imagined adventures have  intrigued numbers of readers since 1929.
"Hitty, Her First  Hundred Years" was written by  Rachel Field and beautifully illustrated by  her  friend Dorothy Lathrop.

original Hitty probably  dates from the 1820s
Judy's Flying Hitty 1997
In the late  1920’s Rachel and her friend Dorothy  saw a little wood doll in the window of an antique shop in New York City.   They  both  fell  in love  with the little doll—too costly for  their  pocketbooks—but  not until they  thought the little doll was sold—did  they  hurry into the  shop, and when they found her  still  there  decided  they  must  have  her for their own.

Judy  has  made  many  Hitty  dolls  since  1983  when  she   was first asked,  by her  friend,   to  carve the  little doll to fit the story.     Judy says,     “ At  the time  I began carving  Hitty, I supposed the doll was a product of Rachel Field’s  imagination.  I  was surprised and delighted  when stories  appeared  in several  Doll  Reader Magazine issues.    She  was,  after all,  a real doll,  who now resides in the Historical  Museum  at the  Stockbridge,  Massachusetts Library.

Judy  took liberties with the description  of  Hitty in the story.   She envisioned  a sweet childface on a little doll that  would balance nicely in the palm  of her hand.  Her little Hitty would  have the snub nose shown in the book and often  the stubborn chin……but she was given a little  ‘extra something’ in that she  could move her arms and legs independently.   Judy’s  Hitty could dance!!!   Unlike  the  original, in which both arms and both legs must move together.

Judy  says, “It is  the  childlike sweetness I  feel in Hitty  that  I  try  to retain in each carving, even though  no two of my  Hittys  ever  look  alike”.

Carve Your Own Hitty (Really No Excuses) Kit

Since 1996  Judy  has  been  encouraging  others  to  carve  their own Hitty  by  providing  a kit that  covers  all  the  excuses  she's ever heard.

This  is  for  all  the people  who  say
"I  would do  that,  but,  .....I don't  know  how  to  find  the  right wood."   Judy  found  some  nice  bass wood  for  the  head/body  and  some  strong birch  for  the arms and  legs---

"I  don't  have a  saw--or a drill"---Judy  did  that  work  for  you--the wood is cut out, pre-fitted, and the  holes are  drilled.  You  take  it  apart to carve and  reassemble  the  parts to  finish.
"I don't have  a  knife".....NO EXCUSES HERE,  --the kit  contains a WARREN Co. whittling knife ( handle with 6  interchangeable blades).  A  super  knife  for one  or  lots  of  Hittys.
"I'm really not sure where to start" --Judy did that for you too --in a step by step pictures and text GUIDELINES FOR CARVING HITTY  booklet
