June 1st 1976- 2000 and Still Going Strong!!
NOTE: A company called Musciom advertises that they are the original Musicians Exchange since 1976. They are scam artists(as referring to telling you they are Musicians Exchange since'76). Their ads say they are Musicians Exchange…But Beware-if you are dealing with them you are NOT dealing with Musicians Exchange. Their Website and phone book ads claim they are……Truth and originality is with the founder…Florida is full of scam artists.
The Original Musicians Exchange Complex, 1976 –1996- Building was condemned by the City of Ft Lauderdale in 1996 and torn down. The blight of the neighborhood brought the end of a Musical South Florida Institution.
723-735 W. Sunrise Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
Background Info: Don Cohen founded the Musicians Exchange as a Referral Service for South Florida musicians, and a complete complex of musical services for the public and musicians on June 1, 1976. Outdoor concerts in the back parking lot of the ‘original’ Musicians Exchange Complex on Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale were some of the first outdoor shows in Ft Lauderdale to give original music bands a stage to play on. It also gave national touring recording artists a final stop on their tours in the SE United State. The Musicians Exchange Café was opened in November of 1981, and from 1981-1996, 5 different Musicians Exchanges locations in Broward and Palm Beach Counties played host to over 1500 name musical acts. Don Cohen was also the founder of the Riverwalk Blues Festival, The So. Florida Music Expo, the brainchild behind the Ft. Lauderdale Cajun and Zydeco Festival, and has consulted with 100’s of bars, corporate organizations, concert venues and private event planners to help make their events successful. From 1997-2000 Don Cohen was the musical entertainment buyer for both Toni Bishop’s in Ft. Lauderdale, and currently Alligator Alley in Sunrise.
MUSICIANS EXCHANGE VENUES
MUSICIANS EXCHANGE COMPLEX 1976-1996(see pic above)-complete entertainment services, from a full line music store, rehearsal and recording studios, musicians referral services, repair shops, music school, Musicians Exchange Café-Concert club and restaurant, and outdoor Concert facility that held up to 1500 outside.
MUSICIANS EXCHANGE DOWNTOWN CAFÉ: Musicians Exchange was invited by the City Manager’s office, in 1985 to be the catalyst to rebuild downtown Ft. Lauderdale into a major entertainment district. In 1988, the Musicians Exchange opened the first real live music facility in the desolate downtown district of Ft Lauderdale. The Exchange was 3 years premature of the “boom” and moved back to its original location on Sunrise Blvd. In Ft Lauderdale, in 1989.
MUSICIANS EXCHANGE AT BOURBON STREET: A group of stock brokers asked the Musicians Exchange to become partners with them in an upscale 5 star restaurant in Boca Raton, FL; approximately May of 1990. The location as the Musicians Exchange was an overnite success. Unfortunately, the company was undercapitalized, and could not pay the Exchange our share of the profits so the Exchange pulled the name off the club 6 weeks after we merged. The club only existed as Bourbon Street without the Musicians Exchange for approximately 6 months after we left.
MUSICIANS EXCHANGE DELRAY; An investment group bought the name from Don Cohen, and moved the club to the quickly growing Atlantic Ave. in Delray Beach FL in 1996. The plan was to reopen another very large Ft. Lauderdale location, within a year from opening Delray. The investors didn’t understand the business, turned the club into an upscale restaurant with music, rather then its original concept of a music room, and closed the doors after 6 months.
