Mrs. Connecticut America  2002 Donna Palmer
                              Farewell from Mrs. Connecticut 2002

After four years of hard work and determination. Perseverance paid off and I "earned " the title of Mrs. Connecticut 2002.  I knew at that moment this would be one of the happiest years of my life, what I didn't know was that it would also be a most difficult and challenging year.  A year in which I would certainly have to test my strength.  The year was filled with a great win, yet it was filled with my most difficult loss.  After a long battle with severe lung disease and emphysema, I lost my biggest fan, my mother.  My goal this past year was to win the title of Mrs. Connecticut so that I could give thanks to the one person that I feel gave me the will and the determination to succeed. I feel so blessed and I thank God every day that my mother was able to see it.  She passed away one week after the national telecast.

Representing our state in Honolulu Hawaii, was a once in a life time experience, one that I will never forget.  I will cherish the memories that I made.  I have learned quite a bit this past year, but more so than ever I learned that life is short, and it is your job to make the most of it.  What you get out of it, is what you put in to it.  I am so fortunate to have met so many wonderful people who have truly touched my life.  I can only say that I hope that I raised the bar slightly so that my successors will come along and continue to do the same.  What a wonderful difference we can make if we always strive to work hard, give our all, and be thankful for what we have.

My sincere thanks to everyone who have taken this ride with me and supported me during this most challenging journey.  To my pageant sisters, Agnes, and Phyllis thank you for making me a part of your pageant family and for being so helpful during my preparations for nationals.  To Sandy, you were with me during my win, and during my loss, you are a wonderful, caring woman, who truly gives from the heart.  I cannot thank you enough!  To Scott Gray from Cinderella's, thank you for dressing me not only this past year but for the last four years!   You have a true passion for what you do and I admire that!   To Gino Moncada from The Gallery Salon, thank you for always squeezing me in to your tight schedule and for always making me look and feel so beautiful, you are so talented.  To my state director Shamus O'Brien, thank you for continuing to be my friend as well as my director.  I'm glad we were able to work together in making my reign everything I hoped it would be.  To my brothers, John, Joey, and sister Lisa, having you in the audience during my win, was like having Mommy there, thank you for always supporting me.  To The American Lung Association of Connecticut, thank you for helping us all breathe just a little bit easier and for doing a wonderful job to help educate people on the importance of lung disease and asthma.  I am honored to be your family chairperson.  Lastly, and most importantly, to my husband Warren and beautiful children, Alec and Alexis.  Warren, you have believed in me from day one.  You have always encouraged me to achieve my own goals and aspirations, yet you are the wind beneath my wings, and because of you, I could fly.  You truly allowed me to shine and I promise you honey, this year is all yours!  Alec and Alexis, You have given me the best title I could ever have. You are what matters to me and I thank God everyday for our family.

Lastly, I encourage you all to remember, "In this world you may be one person, but to one person, you could be the world".  Mom, you were the world to me.  I can honestly say that I am the woman that I am today because of you.  My year as Mrs. Connecticut is dedicated to you.

God Bless
Donna Palmer

Mom, you are the most courageous woman I ever met.  You taught me about life, and to live it to the fullest.  You taught me about strength and determination and because of you, I am the woman I am today.  You will forever remain in my heart.
