The New Music Scene Fanzine - Douglas Mashkow
THE NEW MUSIC SCENE
The NEW MUSIC SCENE was a Fanzine I was a co-founder/Contributing Editor of from 1986-1992.  I sure do miss the Scene, almost as much as I miss good music! Sadly, most of our stuff was on 5.25" floppy discs, so there's no way to add more to this, especially the best stuff from our other writers.

Here's some of my favorite articles I wrote for the Scene:

Haircut Ratings of the Stars, 1991  One of my favorites, an interview with hair stylist Chrissy Pace on the best and worst hairstyles in the music business. Inspired by friends' suggestions that we do "haircut reviews" in addition to album reviews!

What a crazy night! I was supposed to interview Shawn after her record
release party, but the San Francisco earthquake put promotion on the
back-burner. I'm so happy she has made it big, because she's one of the nicest people in the music business I've met.

John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants Interview, January 1989  An interview I did with John Flansburgh of They Might be Giants shortly after the release of their second album "Lincoln." The funny part of the interview was that I was taping it on an answering machine that put a "beep" in every 20 seconds, so we had to keep repeating everything...pretty annoying, but kind of fitting given some of their songs!

State of New Music Address, 1990  My take on what was wrong/right with the music industry. Includes my "9 for the 90's" projection of bands to
watch...hey, I got Shawn Colvin & Lenny Kravitz right!

My yearly ramblings, mostly unfocused, but fun to go back and look at years
later. Still trying to find the diskettes containing 1987-89!

XTC "Oranges & Lemons" Review  Review of Oranges & Lemons disc

Femmes/Pogues/Mojo Nixon live at the "Reebok Riverstage" July 1989.

Costello "Girls x3"/XTC "Rag & Bone Buffet" Review  Review of Elvis Costello's "Girls Girls Girls" and XTC's "Rag & Bone Buffet"

Mash's Thrashes  Every issue, I would have 4-5 sarcastic swipes at the Top 40 hits of the day. There are plenty more than these, but I can't seem to find them on any disk. I seem to remember the missing ones were a whole lot funnier!
