STING...WE'RE "COOL!"
Before his second solo tour in 1987, Sting did a "warmup" gig at the old Ritz in NYC. Friends and I had a fanzine (The New Music Scene) back then, so knowing we were going to the show, we put Sting on the cover and sent some backstage.
After the show, we see Miles Copeland, and asked him if Sting saw our fanzine. Miles says "Sting will read anything with his face on the cover...why don't you go ask him yourselves!" and points us to the VIP door. When the bouncer stopped us, we yell to Miles, and Copeland turned and said "no, they're cool!"
Backstage, we got nowhere near Sting, as he had a crowd 4 deep around him at all times, and Branford Marsalis was long gone, but we did get to talk to Mino Cinelu and the late great Kenny Kirkland, so it was a pretty incredible experience, and being called "cool" by Miles Copeland was probably the greatest validation of our lives to that point!
