What is this show about?
The series is set in rural, 19th century Massachusetts. After Jo Bhaer's (formerly Jo March, one of Alcott's "Little Women") schoolteacher husband Fritz suddenly dies, she must run the Plumfield School for Boys without his guidance.
Fritz and Jo Bhaer were living their dream after several difficult years of building Plumfield into a warm, inviting home and a wonderful school were boys could learn in an atmosphere of kindness and mutual respect. Now alone, Jo's life has changed drastically.
In 1871, a school for boys run by a single woman is not attractive to parents. This is causing a financial hardship for Jo. In the absence of having an adult male influence, maintaining discipline over charges is a daily struggle.
But Jo is a survivor and refuses to abandon the dream she and her husband shared. A student teacher fills in after Fritz's death. She then hires Nick Riley as a caretaker to provide the adult male influence and help with the discipline of the boys.
Nick, a worldly ex-Merchant Marine, has visited places Jo has only read about and lived adventures she only dreams of experiencing. Jo has "book smarts" where Nick has "street smarts." The difference, coupled with Nick's devil-may-care attitude, frequently puts him and Jo at odds.
Although they come from completely different backgrounds, they share a deep void left in their hearts by the tragic loss of someone very close to them. Both come to slowly realize they might fill this void in each other.
Providing support to Jo are her two sister, Meg (her elder sibling) and Amy (her younger sibling). Meg, also a widow, finds comfort from her own loneliness by visiting Plumfield and helping Jo. Amy is a respected painter whose talents are often displayed at the school. Her daughter Bess attends the school, which causes concern to Amy, who worries about the boys' rough behavior and how it might influence her "princess."

Dr.Quinn is a great show about a woman who becomes a doctor in the 1870s. She moves from Boston to rural Colorado Spings in search of acceptance. Instead, after the death of a close friend, she inherits a family of three children.
