PROFESSIONAL WORK
Executive Producer, LU Vision,
Lincoln University and JCTV (January, 2003 – May, 2003); responsible for
overall development of news programs regularly appearing on college television
station, including news selection, student staff assignments, thematic blocking,
scheduling, public service advertising, and coordination of live and taped shows
as needed. Work directly with
students in multicultural Broadcast Journalism program and with regular
non-student staff at the television station. Review news packages and advise
students regarding production quality, news content, professional opportunities,
and academic requirements.
Executive Producer, Pioneer Broadcasting, KHOE
(radio), Fairfield, Iowa (August, 2002 – currently); responsible for creation
of live radio sports broadcasting unit for FM college station, affiliation with
established web broadcasting entities, selection and purchase of equipment,
technical research of potential broadcasting sites, and promotion of advertising
in local community. Also directed live programming for most basketball games and
initially engineered broadcasts onsite; reviewed and critiqued program content
and production quality, coordinated relations with coaching staff and athletic
department, and developed pre-game and halftime features.
Political and Scientific Technical Writing
(September, 1999 – April, 2002): Created daily online newsletter of
international and domestic political issues for third party Presidential
campaign; wrote press releases and marketing plans for international
expansion, newsletters for presentation to technically trained personnel,
articles on genetics, biochemistry and food testing with Chief Scientific
Officer (Genetic ID); and prepared
graphics for scientific publications and campaign brochures.
Public Relations, Internet Marketing Research and
Web Design (January, 1998-December, 2002): Working with both corporate and
non-profit organizations: created, edited and managed websites, including
programming page attributes and elements and a robotic search engine for
link directory, consulting for web design and marketing, using active server
pages and html design tools, editing photos and artwork and adding streaming
video and audio content, and evaluating traffic, response and compatibility,
nightly backup and daily site management. Responsible for developing content and
graphic user interface (GUI) for international website (Genetic
ID) adapted to foreign cultures; human resources research (Internet) to
locate candidates for information technology and software engineering
positions; and development of business plan and marketing for international
company. Organized public relations
campaigns and book tours for authors and political candidates, initiated and
maintained contact with journalists and with publishers, and created advertising
and brochures (Natural Law Party).
First Amendment Law (December 1994-March 1998): In conjunction with the American
Civil Liberties Union, filed a federal court challenge to press censorship
and cable access regulatory constraints
(Coplin
vs. Fairfield et al). Generated research in broadcast history, especially
First Amendment issues and mass media regulation, creating a test case in
the areas of freedom of speech and government censorship of broadcast journalism,
which has had regulatory implications for the talk show format in both
radio and television (see CITATIONS section below). Collaborated in writing the complaint and summary judgment
brief, researched applicable statutes, prepared exhibits, and represented
project before municipal administrative agencies and city council and in
correspondence with the press and other organizations Case was settled out
of court following favorable ruling by the Eighth
Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Paul, April 30, 1997 (96-2026).
Television Journalist/Producer (April 1993-November 1994): As current affairs
television producer at FPATV (Fairfield, Iowa), supervised production for
community and neighborhood organizations and performed outreach to connect
with groups and individuals to participate in the series; publicized the
program by writing public service announcements and press releases, developing
and utilizing media contacts; coordinated public relations for special events.
Trained groups in audio/video production at university and public access
facilities Organized citizens with diverse interests, cultures, and tastes
to allow them to express themselves on public issues. Directed and produced
2-3 hour television news program for 75 consecutive shows, administering
weekly preparation including scripting and budgeting, assigning staff to
specific events and to studio tasks. Conducted live call-in shows with candid
discussion of controversial topics. Interviewed guests, including leaders
from fields of education, medicine, government, business, and entertainment
industry in their locales. Produced video reports on news and cultural events,
criminal justice, substance abuse, psychotherapy and counseling modalities,
spousal abuse, health care reform, etc.
