This here is the heroine of the story Benio Hanamura a.k.a the "Modern Girl". While most girls of her time were still dressing in the traditional kimono, Benio was not the one to shy away from dressing up western style(keep in mind this is early 20th century clothing and also miss Hanamura has poor taste in fashion!!!). At the beginning of the story Benio is 17 and a student at a preparatory school for girls (in this case a school on-how-to become a good japanese housewife). Benio has little interest in home-economics and would rather study literature. Her world is turned inside-out after an unexpected encounter with lieutenant Ijuin on his way to the household of his future bride. After a series of embarassing and comical scenes, involving her and the lieutenant, she receives the schock of her life when she learns that the gentlemen she had met earlier was her soon-to-be-fiance. After listening to the circumstances that led to this suprised engagement Benio is thoroughly convinced that the whole thing is pure lunacy. For one she will not agree to marry a man she barely knows and especially not for a stupid promise made long before she was born!!!!

This Is Shinobu Ijuin, Benio's fiance. Shinobu is kind and gentle by nature. He also is quite devoted to his grandparents. This is probably because he was raised by them after his father left him to their cares. The circumstances of his birth are quite sad. He is the product of an ill-fated romance between a beautiful German noblewoman and a Japanese diplomat. His parents were forced to leave each other soon after his birth due to the continuing social and family pressure placed on his mother by her relatives. His father abandon Shinobu to the cares of his grandparents and left Japan. He later died alone in a foreign land.
Despite the fact his engagement to Benio was arranged he seems to grow fond of his bride-to-be. Due to his fondness and desire to marry Benio his taste in women is often questioned by his friends. According to Waki Yamato's description of Benio she is thin as a stick and flat as a board :P
Benio can count herself lucky because very few man would be able to put up with her often time idiotic actions.

This is Ranmaru Fujieda, Benio's childhood friend. He is a year younger than Benio (16?) He is elegant and rather feminine in looks and manners. This is probably because he was raised to play female leads in the Kabuki theater. Due to his pretty looks he is often confused for a girl and needless to say gets hit on a lot by men. Despite all this he is absolutely in love with Benio and would do anything for her. He even goes as far as posing as maid in the Ijuin household just to stay by Benio side. He of course intended to help Benio in her plans to break off the engagement. He also is the only one that has seen Benio's flat chest :P (of course aside from her future husband). He remains extremely loyal to Benio even after she had fallen in love with Shinobu Ijuin. Unfortunately for him his loyalty often puts him in strange and rather embarassing situations for Benio's sake

Tamaki is Benio's bestfriend and classmate. She is admired by her classmates and Benio for her independent spirit, beauty, and brains. Tamaki is in love with Shinobu and is upset that he has announced his engagement to another woman. When she later found out who the "lucky" bride was she felt she still had a chance to win him over...However, she gives up after realizing that Shinobu had fallen for Benio. Tamaki will find love with the most unlikely candidate.....

Shingo Onijima is a rebel soldier from the Japanese army sent to the front in Siberia.
His nonchalant and rebelious attitude often gets him in hot water; however beneath the cold exterior is a kind and loyal man. He became friends with his commanding officer, Shinobu Ijuin, after he saved his life during a battle with the Russians. After the war in Russia Onijima left for Manchuria where he became the head of a feroucious and feared group of mountain bandits. A strange twist of fate will place Benio on his path and in his heart.......
Other stats: He has only one eye; a scar on his right cheeck; he dresses mostly in black; has a horrible time expressing his feeling to women (he uses words such as "stupid" "monkey" "imbecile" which according to Waki-sensei denotes "I love you")

The" Geisha" (I forgot her name :P) She is the widow of Shinobu's close-friend. After the death of her husband she attempted suicide but was rescued by Shinobu. She falls in love with him...she also adopts a fondness for Benio (nothing ecchi o.k!)

Tosei is Benio's Mysognistic Boss and owner and editor in chief of a small newpaper agency(Jodansha). He's tall, with long wavy blond (or light-colored) hair (another bishounen). Has a weird alergic response towards women probably brought on by his strained relationship with his mother. However, seems to be immune to Benio (one of the reason he falls for her?). Despite his impersonal exterior is really a nice person and genuinely cares for Benio and his staff. He's also "engaged" to this really ugly stocky(to be PC I won't say the F word) chick whose always at his work place and in Benio's face ( but her presence is mainly for comic relief no Angst here) Sorry I haven't have the chance to scan his pic but I will soon :)
