A dedication to my two favorite Shoujo mangas
konnichiwaaa minna (hi everyone!!!),
I have finally decided to start my own webpage. And what better subject to talk about than Shoujo anime/manga. For those who aren't familiar with these terms they refer to japanese animation aimed at a mostly female audience (of course there's also a loyal male following). The themes range from heart-wrenching melodramas to light-hearted romantic high school dramas.

So What is This Page About?
NOW onto the main events....This page is a dedication to SHOUJO KAKUMEI UTENA (Revolutionary Girl Utena) by talented the Chiho Saito AND a lesser known work of art by the veteran manga artist WAKI YAMATO. The japanese title is "HAIKARASAN GA TOORU" The Italian version (my main source for this series) translated it as: "There Goes the Modern Girl" My first exposure to this series was through the anime back in the early 1980's when I was 8/9. Although most fans believe the manga is better than the anime, I liked it a lot.

A brief overview:
There are many sites on Utena so for an intro on this series I highly recommend visiting the anipike link listed below. My page is going to concentrate on both the manga version and the animated series. I know there are quite a few Utena page out there, however, I will include layouts from my favorite pages in the manga including translation notes. So bare with me..... I plan on doing the same with the "The Modern Girl" by Waki Yamato. I noticed that there is very little information on the web about this manga; This is probably due to the fact that it belongs to the old school of the shoujo genre. The art and style are quite different from modern shoujo manga such as Sailormoon or Magic Knight Rayearth. But I think it deserve attention and that's why I set up this page.
"The Modern Girl"
The story is set in Japan in the Taisho era (1911-1925?); it is tale of the times and love of a modern girl, Benio Hanamura. Her father, a widow and an officer in the japanese imperial army, decided to marry her off to a young lieutenant, Shinobu Ijuin. In reality Benio fate had been sealed since birth. We soon discover that Shinobu, who is extremely dedicated to his grandmother, decided to fulfill her life-long dream of seeing her grandson married to the granddaughter of the man she had loved as a young girl but could never marry due to the social differences between them. Upon parting with her lover, she promised that someday their blood would reunite....Now the day had arrive that the Ijuin and the Hanamura would become one family. However, Benio is a young woman with aspiration of a career. In addition she would not stand to be a pawn in pact made long before her birth. If she was to get married it would be for love and nothing less.....Will benio overcome the stumbling blocks posed by both her family and the society of her period to find her place in life and perhaps love.....
