OUR MISSION STATEMENT

We are PFLAG, parents, families, and friends of lesbians and gays. We are also gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered persons. We come from all corners of the earth, from all cultural, religious, and ethnic groups.

We know that a person’s sexual orientation is neither chosen nor something which has been taught, and it is not simply a “phase” individuals go through.

There is no pattern to the kind of families that homosexual, bisexual, and transgendered persons come from – dominant or submissive mothers, weak or strong fathers, single parent homes, or nuclear or extended families. They may be an only child, or they may be the youngest, middle, or oldest, with siblings who are heterosexual.

We view rejection of a gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered person by his or her family as a tragedy. We share this stance with you because we are members of close-knit, supportive and loving family units. We respect the truth; we recognize the reality of individual differences and honor the right of each person to be who he or she authentically is. We love and affirm all our family members, and we are committed to full civil and human rights for everyone.

MEETING NOTICE: PFLAG ON THE PORCH - SUMMERTIME AND THE LIVIN’ IS EASY

Cathedral City, May 11 –  PFLAG’s May meeting will address issues related to living in a resort community that, notwithstanding increasing numbers of year-round residents, retains a strongly seasonal character.  Part of the discussion will center on ideas for chapter development in the coming year.

“The summer months are when our Desert really does become a very small town.” PFLAG chapter President Paul S. Marchand explained.  “While there is the summertime advantage of having the place to ourselves, there’s also a downside in that many of the activities in which people participate during the so-called season simply aren’t happening,” Marchand added, noting that PFLAG itself is subject to a drop-off in attendance during the summer months.

“This is a time when those of us who do live here year-round need to come together,” Marchand also said.  “The summer months give us a time to rest, but also an opportunity to plan for our future.  The season now begins in roughly mid-October for some folks,” Marchand noted.  “We need to use our summer months to get ready for the beginning of the 2002-2003 Season, and to plan our outreach to our constituency.”

“Summertime and the Livin’ is Easy” will take place in the Community Room of the Cathedral City Library, located at the corner of Date Palm Drive and Dave Kelley (formerly Ortega), in Cathedral City on Sunday, May 19, 2002.  The meeting will begin at 2:30 p.m., and will end promptly at 4:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.  This PFLAG event is free and open to the public.

THIS MONTH’S FAQs FOR EDUCATED COYOTE
Our own Varmint with a Degree and an Attitude is back, answering your quesions on Leather Price, camp, prejudice, and how he got his gig (he’s not telling!)

Educated Coyote, I’ve seen a bumper sticker that looks like some sort of pride flag, It has nine horizontal stripes, alternating black and royal blue, with a white stripe in the center.  The central stripe is white.  There is a large red heart in the upper left quadrant.  Is it a pride flag, and if so, what does it mean?
Vexillologically Challenged.

Dear Vexillogically Challenged:
I wasn’t entirely sure whether I was right in my understanding that what you’ve
described is a leather pride flag, so I checked with Chapter Vice Presidents Carol and
Mike Balasa, who were kind enough to provide me with some information.  According
to the information from the Balasas, the Leather Pride Flag was created by artist Tony
DeBlase, based on column he wrote in Drummer magazine.  It made its official debut
on May 28, 1989 at the International Mr. Leather contest in Chicago, and was
conceived by the artist as a “simple, elegant banner that would serve as a symbol of
[the leather community’s] own identity and interests.”  The artist “leave[s] it to the
viewer to interpret the colors and symbols.
