The 1970s Indian Motorcycle

The Beginning:

The Indian minicycles started in 1968 with Floyd Clymer partnering up with Ital Jet of Italy.Clymer made nothing himself, but he strived to one day expand the line from Mini-Mini to full-size V-twin.

Clymer Passes

In 1970,when Clymer's Indian was gaining steam,he passed away.Thankfully Clymer's attorney Alan Newman took over.He paid off any outstanding debts and envisioned a full line of lightweights for the 70s and beyond.

Indian Motorcycle Company

Newman continued importing Ital Jet minicycles, but in 1972 started a plant in Taiwan and began making and assembling its own products.Engines supplied by Minarelli, and Fuji were used. Now with models ranging from 50cc thru 125cc,sales peaked at just over 20,000 units. In 1975 the larger 175cc Minarelli engine was used as well.Sales however slumped and fortunes slipped away.Newman gave up in Jan 1977.Ital Jet acquired control of the Taiwan plant.Later,it would be rented out to American Moped Associates in 1980,as they purchased the rights to the Indian name in 1977/78 for use on a line of 4-stroke mopeds.
