Spencer Murdoch and Jack O’Connor return with Agent Alma and his federal agents to help the Murdoch family survive the winter on a primitive island world surrounded by the devastation caused by a global storm. Spring arrives, and the ragtag group discovers that their protection of the portals at the center of the island will be more than mundane. A malicious green growth of thorn-covered branches turns the island into a maze of tunnels leading from a central clearing into each of the islands octants. Each tunnel leads to the discovery of new magical creature, such as the venomous winged snake and the tiny fish-mouse, each of which plays a role in making every day on the island an adventure. However, there is no trail leading into the western octant and the nightly drumming emanating from the domed western clearing is a source of anxiety to the islanders. Sora Sesha, the giant, talking, feathered serpent from the southwestern octant, warns Spencer to prepare for battle against the forces of evil residing in the western clearing. Will the islanders succeed in battle against an unknown foe or will they have to rely on an unlikely source for their salvation?
