INTRODUCTION
The Edsonian, now in its 50th year, was begun by Col. Carroll Edson coincident with the formation of the Edson Family Association, now the Edson Genealogical Association. For many years it was hand typed and mimeographed, then offset printed from the typed originals, then typeset and printed and now it is prepared by computer with Microsoft Publisher97 and then printed.
This index has been constructed with the researcher in mind, and emphasizes names and events. Routine business has for the most part not been listed, although occasional mention is made of annual financial reports, etc. to simplify the Association's own research into the history of the group.
Col. Edson followed a fixed format during his tenure, consisting of the following elements:
A. ORGANIZATIONAL
B. HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL
C. GENEALOGICAL DATA
D. REPORTS FROM THE FIELD
E. CURRENT HISTORY
F. LETTERS
Within each volume (year), the subparagraphs in each of the above sections were continuously numbered, e.g., if the first issue of the year ended the Organizational section as A-14, the next issue would begin with A-15. Also, within each section, there was quite a bit of standardization, such as:
A. Organizational, usually contained paragraphs on new members, address corrections requested,10-year members, 15-year members, etc. and reunion data.
E. Current History, always contained Birth, Death and Marriage reports.
We have stressed the Genealogical Data and the Biography sections in this index, because this is for the most part the most interesting, and the most historically valuable since much data will be found here that may not be in the published Edson Family History and Genealogy. The only routine item we have listed is he fact that the issue contained a New Member List, and that only because it provides addresses which can be of great value.
Normally, in the "Data Wanteds," we list only the last name of other family groups; these are all intermarriages with Edsons, and we hope it will aid quick-scanning for names of interest until such time as we can computerize the index and easily alphabetize the list. "Wanteds" for Edsons list the first name, of course.
In the 1974-1984 period, the format was modified but still followed a numbered structuring. Beginning in 1985, a fixed format was dropped in favor of a magazine style with emphasis on feature stories and letters for the exchange of data; this also marked the beginning of our typeset and folded composition.
We hope the index proves of value. Please let us know your comments for the second edition; an annual issue is contemplated.
