Computer-based and Internet-based applications
Nonprofit organizations are increasingly using Internet Application Providers (ASPs) to develop and manage databases, transfer documents, and maintain client and staff data, rather than computer software application programs. There has been a fear that database systems that are not located "onsite" are somehow less reliable than onsite computer applications like Access and Excel.
However, as many have found, these onsite applications are complicated, require updates frequently, and each individual using these applications must be trained in the particular application.
The issue of "losing the information" if the Internet provider service goes offline for any reason is usually alleviated when we realize that most of the ASP's have a number of backup sites, mirror sites, and harddrive backups for your information.
Confidentiality issues can be alleviated when we realize that most of the ASPs provide encryption technology as part of the service, and client data is coded so that only your organization knows the identity of the client.
