The Nile River
Mousey
also saw lots of people fishing from boats on the Nile. As Mousey watched
he saw the fishermen sitting in their boats hitting the water with their
oars. At first, Mousey thought that maybe the fishermen were trying
to hit the crocodiles to chase them away. But Mousey did not see any
crocodiles (he was glad he did not see crocodules anyway, because he was
afraid that they might gobble him up).
Then Mousey thought that the
fishermen were trying to catch the fish by hitting them on the head so that
they would be stunned and the fishermen could just scoop them up. But
Mousey thought that was not a very good way to catch fish because they are
very hard to hit when they are underwater. Then Mousey learned what
the fishermen were doing.
As Mousey watched, the fishermen
laid their nets across the river. Then they rowed their boats a little
way away from their nets and started to hit the water with their oars.
When the fish heard the sound of the oars hitting the water they would
get scared and they would try to swim away from the sound. But when
the fish swam away from the oars, they swam right into the nets. Then
the fishermen would row back to the nets, pull them into their boats, and
go home to cook the fish for dinner.
