Quakers in the Lineage
I'm going to begin with religious dissenter, Anne Hutchinson, though she was an antinomian, not a Quaker. Mary Barrett Dyer, the Quaker martyr, was her friend and was somewhat influenced by Anne.
My Line back to Anne Hutchinson:
Anne Marbury/William Hutchinson
Edward Hutchinson/Katherine Hamby
Anne Hutchinson/Samuel Dyer
Henry Dyer/Mary(Royce?)
Marie Anna Dyer/Noah Phelps
Barrett Phelps/Hannah Bigelow
Noah Phelps/Ruth Loveland
Hannah Phelps/Ephraim Palmer
Mary Melissa Palmer/John Henry Brown
Wallace Drayton Brown/Ruth Belle Jackson
Wallace Harland Brown MY DAD.
Interesting things about Anne Hutchinson:
A statue of Anne Hutchinson is located directly outside the west wing of the State House in Boston.
One of her famous quotes: "As I understand it, laws, commands, rules and edicts are for those who have not the light which makres plain the pathway."
You can see right there how she could have gotten into trouble with the Puritans (& did).
Anne believed that women were equally capable of interpreting the Bible without intervention from church elders. She advocated religious freedom and toleration and was banished from Boston for her 'radical' ideas. Anne and her followers then went to Rhode Island where they founded the first civil government in America: the colony of Portsmouth.
She was afraid, however, that the MA Bay authorities would gain control of Portsmouth, therefore, in 1643 she took the younger part of her family and moved to the Dutch Colony of New Netherlands, settling at Pelham Bay (the Bronx today.) Because the Durch had antagonized nearby Indians that year, the Indians rose up and attacked settlements beyond the walled protection of New Amsterdam (NYCity). Anne and several of her chldren were murdered by the Indians in 1643.
Lineage to Mary Barrett DYER, Quaker martyr
Mary Barrett/William Dyer
Samuel Dyer/Anne Hutchinson (Anne Marbury Hutchinson's gr/daughter)
the line then comes down the same.
Interesting things about Mary Barrett DYER
Mary and William Dyer were excommunicated and banished from Boston because of their association with Anne Marbury Hutchinson (see above),and followed her to Rhode Island where they were among the founders of Portsmouth. Mary spent several years in England where she met George Fox, founder of the Quaker religion, and returned to the colonies in time for the new laws which banished Quakers from the MA Bay Colony upon pain of death. Imprisioned several times and nearly hanged with 2 of her Quaker Friends (who were), she returned to Boston one too many times and became the first woman hanged for her Quaker convictions.
I have done a lot of reading about the problems the Quakers and the established MA Bay religion (Puritan) had. The Puritans insisted that the Quakers were odious and broke into Puritan church services, disrupting them. They were accused of all manner of improprieties, like nakedness in public, which were totally untrue. Since there as yet was no separation of Church and State, the Puritans felt it their right to be as intolerant as they had to be to cleanse their communities of any freedom of choice in religion. They were as intolerant as the Church of England which they had fled (to reform it here in America, not to scrap it altogether the way the Pilgrims did.)
Other Quaker surnames in our paternal lines:
THORN, WEBSTER (whoops, this one is in my maternal line), HALLOCK,PALMER,PHELPS, BIGELOW, SWAZEY, HOWELL, KING, and there could be more. One of the problems I have is that there are so many Quakers in my genealogy, and I get them confused. I have them in my maternal lines, coming down from Hannah Feake/John Bowne, then in my paternal lines I have them in both my paternal grandfather's line (the Dyers/Phelps/Bigelow) and my paternal grandmother's line (Hallock, etc which is
