John Goin Bush was born on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, as was a man named John Goin who he was likely descended from and named after. This older John Goin was recorded as a free man with property as early as 1641.

The John Goin, (pictured left) married Mary Ellen "Nellie" Newman (far left) in about 1867. His father, also a John Goin Bush, was born about 1800 and was married to an Eliza Daniels.
