What is a Lami / Idol card?
I've been collecting SM idol cards since 1999 but, I do not claim to know everything about them. So far though, I have come up with this description. An Idol card is a heavily laminated card, hence the name "Lami". These cards have also been referred to as Rami and/or Movic cards. The card has both a front and back image. On the older SM Idol cards the image on the back is only made up of 2 or 3 colors. The front image is full color. Some of the SuperS cards are full color on the back.
Seika Note produced the cards and they are planned by Movic or Toei. The back images differ from set to set. All of the Sailor Moon idol cards have a toei sticker (little cat with a black hat) on the back, unless the sticker has been peeled off. This shows that the card is authentic. However, just because a card is missing its toei sticker doesn't mean it's not authentic. I have a few cards that the stickers have been torn/worn off. This affects the value of the cards to me. I would rather have a card with the sticker intact. The prices I've paid ranges from $1.50 to $15 a piece, with or without sticker. On average it is $5 each. I'm so poor now. -_-
Scratches are a common occurrence. Most of my cards have faint scratches that are
barely noticeable, you have to turn them in the light to even see them. I think that
most of the scratches happen because they are treated roughly. The lamination does
provide some protection but they are not indestructible. Come on people, treat lami
cards with some level of care! :-) And my gosh, don't peel off the sticker!
The number of the card is actually the date which it was made. Example: 0792A
means that it was made in July of 1992 & it is card "A" in that series. Some cards
only have a letter for identification.
There are lots of fake Lami out there. I have seen some of them with a prismatic
image on the front and a plain image of Chibi Usa holding Luna-P on the back. As far
as I know there were no prismatic Sailor Moon idol cards made. Most of the fakes I
have seen only have a image on the front. The backs usually say something like
Kodak. There are even manga style lami cards, they are not authentic.
