From Spirituals to Rap: A Musical Panorama Strident social, economic, and politcal discord occurred when the peoples of Europe and Africa came together on the shores of the Americas. In music, however, there was a great notable exception. The percussion, syncopation, and rhythmic varieties of Africa blended with the instrumental and harmonic varieties of Europe to produce music that has been enjoyed the world over.
In this presentation the foundational African and European characteristics are emphasized while musical excerpts are played in their evolutionary development. Stress is put on the fact that the music of Latin-America bears the same characteristics. The mathematics and science of music are stressed through its various rhythms and tonalities. Since music like literature expresses the being, hopes, fears, and aspirations of humanity, the historical context in which it arises is also presented. For more information please write to Eldred C.
