Physical Education at Emerson
Welcome to Physical Education
with Mrs. Wardlow
Best wishes to Mrs. Wardlow on her retirement. We appreciate all you have done for Emerson!
Mrs. Wardlow has a special message to her students, followed by info on our Thrilling jumpathon:
Dear Students,
Each of you have given me joy, made me laugh and have shared in my passion for teaching. I have shared trips and adventures with you through ghost and bear hunts into far away jungles, have had block party dances right inside my gymnasium , and have journeyed
through those dark, slimy, spooky tunnels during Halloween. I have taught you to hug a particular tree every time you pass by it and always sying thank you for giving us oxygen so we can keep on living and giving back to the tree. We have clilmbed Mt. Emerson and challenged each of you to go as far as you can, trusting your classmates with each step and handhold; sometimes making you go through a hoop, sometimes blindfolded, sometimes connected to a partner with a rope.
We have honored our Grandparents by holding a Sr. Prom in our gymnasium during the years of 2000-2003. I taught the children all the oldies dances so that they could dance with that special grandparent or significant older person in their lives. We made corsages, fed them and then asked if they would share their life experiences or favorite hobby with the 6th graders. Thank you Joan Brand Hersch for initiating the idea and for heading the student council during that time and for our former principal, Mrs. Stein, for making it happen.
I belileve that the special artifacts from Emerson's grandparents and students are to be dug up in 2015.
We have danced with parachutes, sticks, and homemade shakers, poles, and scarves, skated across Vienna, Austria on paper skates, and jump roped our way to better understanding of children with heart problems, like our 6th grader who is now able to lead a healthy normal life thanks to donations, research, caring, and compassion. Our Field Days always had a different theme from Disney, to Peace and Diversity, Character Words, etc., to the Olympics. The lighting of the torch was breathtaking.
A special thanks to the PTO for all the support you have given me through the years with your time, money, and committment. Thank you Kathy Ivins for making my dream and passion about civil rights come alive and for putting together Martin Luther King's "The Dream Lives On" with the help of your student council and your "Power Hour " Students.
We know that better movers are better thinkers. I teach one of the most inclusive subjects of all time. All children can succeed in my class if they dare to step out of the box and their comfort zone. When my 5th and 6th graders were working on their dance routines, I saw the shyest and most self-conscious child suddenly leap, jump, turn, and spin to the music.
I have enjoyed being with each and every one of you. Stay active, healthy, and keep your dream alive.
With love, Ms. Wardlow

• Thanks to all who helped make this year's JUMP-A-THON the biggest success ever! At our kickoff assembly on Friday April 11th, GO RED DAY, Student Council members dared Mrs. Cubberly to accept a "thriller" of a challenge: if we raise $3000 will she dance to Thriller! Click the picture to view Mrs. Cubberly accepting! On Thursday and Friday, April 24th and 25th, we did not raise $3000 during the Jump-A-Thon.... we raised $5242! WOW!
On Friday May 30th, Mrs. Cubberly made good on her challenge! She performed Thriller to the eager assembly of staff, students, AND CBS3 News! After her amazing solo, School Board Member Zombies joined her for an encore! Thanks to Mrs. Stacey Pressley and Mrs. Stacy Gerlach for joining in on the big event! This year's JUMPATHON was dedicated to an Emerson Student with a congenital heart defect who leads a happy, healthy, and productive life due to successful research and development, and a caring medical team. Our Emerson team of staff, parents, jumping students, and a real sport of a principal, helped us help the American Heart Association so others may receive this precious quality of life.
