              VICTORIAN ENGLANDER  HOUSE TM
                a San Francisco Victorian mansion

LOCATION: Cathedral Hill / Opera Plaza / Civic Center at 807 Franklin St. (between Turk & Eddy

PIANOS: Performances on piano are "on a beautiful and perfectly maintained Yamaha Grand" Ching Chang, SF Chronicle, 10/3/03 (newer Yamaha 7-1/2 foot concert grand with Disklavier)
or on a 1928 Steinway Reproducing Piano purported to have originally belonged to Henry J. Kaiser.

SETTING: Grand, old, 1880 Italianate Victorian mansion, gilded, double parlor, music room, & dining room, (65 feet long), filled with museum quality American Victorian antiques.  Featured in the books,   "A Gift to the Street" & "San Franciso: Building the Dream City", by Jim Heig, VICTORIAN ENGLANDER HOUSE celebrates its 125th Birthday with an encore presentation of The Liszt in Leather, SF Concerto  Orchestra Concert Jan. 23, 2005. With its 13 ft. ceilings, it is one of the grandest and most original of the surviving San Francisco Victorians from the "Gilded Age".  Built in 1880, this four story 7,500 square foot home is illuminated with original gasoliers (gas chandeliers/lighting now electrified), including one featured as a prop in the 1944 classic film, Gaslight, that originally came from Sherwood Hall, a 50 room, 1878 Victorian summer mansion that was dismantled for its lumber to be used for set construction during the materials rationing of WWII, and was located on a 300 acre estate at what is now known as Menlo Park, just south of SF. Directed by George Cukor, Gaslight won 2 of the 6 categories in 1945 for which it was nominated, & starred the fabulous 3 time Oscar winner, Ingrid Bergman (her performance won her first Academy Award & Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, beating out the likes of Barbara Stanwyck -Double Indemnity, Bette Davis, Greer Garson, & Claudette Colbert. Also Starring Charles Boyer & Joseph Cotton, and with a 17 year old Angela Lansbury who was nominated as Best Actress in a Supporting Role, though its her first movie. She lost out to Ethel Barrymore in None but the Lonely Heart. The other Oscar Gaslight won was for Art Direction/Interior Decoration, which considering the anti-Victorian tastes of the decades including the 40's caused the demolition of some of the finest existing Victorian Mansions is quite a testament to the Oscar winners' vivid recreation of a Gaslit Victorian's ambiance, as well as to the surprising historical accuracy of the Victorian Interior Set's furniture and decorative arts.
For parlor concert ticket purchasers, the large, 1880, Italianate, Victorian Englander House museum is open for free self guided touring 30 minutes before and after each performance.
View the extensive collection of museum quality American furniture from 1865 through 1895, including examples made by the premiere New York furniture makers to the Robber Barons of the Gilded Age:  Herter Brothers Bros. (for mansions in  NY for E. D. Morgan who in 1905 founded Belmont Racetrack along with Thomas Hitchcock, William K. Vanderbilt, J. P. Morgan, & William C. Whitney; Warren, PA for Union Oil Company founder Beaty; & San Francisco patrons: railroad magnate Senator, Milton Latham & the prominent Tobin-Martin family);  Pottier & Stymus (for James Flood, Silver Baron of the Comstock Lode);  and the firms of Alexander Roux, Parker Bros., Bradley & Hubbard, & the Meriden Silver Plate Company. Cast iron garden ornaments include a fountain by Fiske, for the San Francisco de Youngs of newspaper fame, and an 1872 statue of Venus for California Senator & railroad baron Milton Latham.Silver include a punch ladle made by SF silversmiths Vanderslice for  Alfred Cohen, attorney to the Union Pacific Transcontinental Railroad & its Big Four owners. His Alameda, CA mansion once contained the largest library West of the Mississippi, and a Gutenberg Bible. The Original furnishings in the Englander House include a twelve foot tall 24-karat gold gilt pier mirror, purchased from the San Francisco purveyor Hausman Bros. circa 1880. This Victorian even contains the front door of the Victorian mansion  from the set of  Hitchcock's Psycho movie as well as the 3 sequels with Anthony Perkins.

Readers of the book, 920 O'Farrell Street - A Jewish Girlhood in Old San Francisco by Harriet Lane Levy, will be interested to know that the Englander House is the surviving San Francisco Victorian most like the Levy house. The Englander House, at 807 Franklin St. is located just 5 blocks from the former site of the Levy Victorian, and their neighbor, Alice B. Toklas. They both were inhabited by German, Jewish, merchant-class, emigrants.

Victorian Music & Culture Series...Each June, The San Francisco Concerto Orchestra performs & hosts concerts of Victorian music & composers mentioned in the Music Room chapter of the book, 920 O'Farrell Street, at the Victorian Englander House's Victorian parlors venue.

When SF Chronicle's SFGATE columnist Ching Chang listed an Englander House Halloween 2003 concert in the Favorite Picks section of his Clef Notes, he wrote if the Victorian Englander House's antique-stuffed parlors weren't so immaculately maintained, the house could convincingly be turned into a set for "The Addams Family." This fact hasn't escaped pianist and house resident Seth Montfort, who presents a Halloween house concert featuring Chopin's Funeral March, Liszt's "Totentanz" & "The Supernatural House Sonata," a work inspired by the house's spontaneous sounds & its resident ghosts.

Victorian Movie Prop Rental: The Victorian Englander House has many antique props available for rent to the documentary film or movie making industry.

The Victorian Englander House is available for rent for filming, sit-down formal dinner parties, concerts, Tango dancing with musicians, weddings, Christmas & New Years Eve parties, etc. In the future, Victorian Englander House will have its huge bedrooms available for bed & Breakfast use, and each will have its own grand piano. Featured bedroom is Annette's Amboyna Bedroom. Call Mark at 415-563-5135 or 415 776-5780 for details.
