Face to 3D

Convert Your Face Photos to 3D

Faceto3D

The ideal method for converting human faces into 3D STL files is to have a person pose for a 3D image by going to a studio where a 3D camera is used to convert the person’s head into a 3D file via a high resolution laser scanner or similar device. However, it is very often impractical or not economical to capture 3D images in this manner.

Faceto3D offers a service (Faceto3D) to translate two-dimensional images of a person’s face into 3 dimensional stereolithography (STL) or VRML files. These 3D files can then be used to fabricate a 3D head model using a CNC milling machine or rapid prototyping system. The 3D files can be converted into another file format to allow laser engraving in crystal.

Faceto3D Input
The quality of the input imagery is critical to the quality of the 3D output. Best results will be achieved using the best quality imagery available. (e.g., high resolution, high-resolution digital pictures, or video captures)
We recommend the following image sizes or larger.
Head images- 512 x 512 pixels
Place the camera as far as you can from the subject, but as close-up as you can, framing the whole head in the viewfinder. Use as much zoom as you have available - and photograph the subject in the positions described below:
The following rules will give you the best results, though you may find that the 3D output is more than adequate even if not all of the rules are followed.
Front
· The subject's head should be upright, facing the camera.
· Long hair should be pushed back off the face.
· The eyes and the bottoms of the ears (specifically, the points at which the ears join the head) should be in-line, and horizontal.
· The eyes should be looking directly ahead, at the camera
· The mouth should be closed with the face relaxed and the facial expression neutral.
Profile
· The subject's head should be upright, facing 90 degrees from the camera.
· The camera should be the same distance away from the subject as the front face view
· Long hair should be pushed back off the face.
· The eyes and bottoms of the ears (the point at which the ear joins the head) should be in-line, and horizontal.
· The eyes should be looking directly ahead, facing 90 degrees from the camera.
· The mouth should be closed with the face relaxed and the facial expression neutral.
· Right and left profile images are the best, but the conversion process can be done with just the right or the left profile
Even, continuous lighting around the whole subject with minimal shadows and hotspots will give the best results. Ambient, or rigged lighting is preferable to using flash, especially using compact cameras with low zoom.
