Fairhaven Village Militia
FAIRHAVEN, MASSACHUSETTS
Who We Are
After a few years as volunteer tour guides at Fort Phoenix in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, the Fairhaven Village Militia was officially organized in 2003 to promote the history of the fort and portray local life during the 1770s.
Today our group is made up of men, women and children who represent village residents and militia members at the time of the American Revolution.
From spring to fall we are on duty at least twice a week at Fort Phoenix. We present interesting and educational programs for local and out-of-town visitors, school groups, and organizations.
The Fairhaven Village Militia holds a weekend encampment each year in September, participates in the town's annual Fourth of July Parade, and takes part in other local events.
Fort Phoenix Days
Historical Encampment
Each year on the second weekend of September, the Fairhaven Village Militia holds a living history encampment at Fort Phoenix. Members of the public can see colonial activities including militia drilling and musket firing demonstrations, campfire cooking, spinning and domestic tasks, and more. Hands-on activities include traditional children's games and tomahawk throwing.
At sunset on the Saturday evening, the militia's artillery crew demonstrates loading and firing the fort's five 24-pound Seacoast Defense cannon.
