Equine Sports Massage of the Carolinas

Equine Sports Massage Therapy is a therapeutic application of hands on massage techniques for the purpose of increasing muscle tone, increases range of motion and creates friction that separates clumping muscle fibers and adhesions .The stimulation it provides to the muscle causes the brain to release natural “feel good” chemicals called endorphins, which leaves your horse feeling great all over.

Sixty percent of your horses total body weight is skeletal muscle. Some times tight spots develop and hinder a horse’s performance and causes discomfort. Muscle tightening does not remain in an isolated area or state. Elastic properties of the tendon is about 10%. Thus, 90% of elasticity must come from the associated muscles. If one group tightens, the next group of muscles must compensate for the loss of elasticity. It may pass along to the next group and so forth. For instance, tightening in the shoulders may pass to the muscles of the upper arm and eventually to the tendons of the lower leg.

Thru massage, tightening and adhesions in muscles are broken up by using different friction strokes that allow oxygen and blood flow to return in a greater capacity. Stress is relieved and the horse is able to return to complete soundness.
Disposition can also be affected . Disobedience and behavioral problems in a horse can be related to discomfort and when pain is relieved, its disposition will improve.

Massage therapy is not a substitute for veterinary medicine. It is most effective when used as a preventative measure before or after a competition. By breaking up tight knots of adhering fibers, which restrict full muscle extension, massage can help prevent a pull or muscle tear from occurring during exercise.

Common Signs of
Muscular Problems

* Shortened Strides  *Head Shaking  *Bucking  *Sore Back  *Stumbling
*Girthing Problems  *Forging
*Change in attitude  & Behavior
*Shoulder & Hip Lameness
*Neck Stiffness  *Kicking
*Refusal to pick up correct lead and/or canter

Many horses live with poor gaits, or even bad attitudes, from old holding patterns. (example) The horse favored an injured leg in the past, possibly before you owned him/her. Even though the injury has healed, he/she still holds himself the old way, (gets about the compensated way he worked around the injury), affecting his present performance. Massage helps alleviate the old muscle adhesions and releases the old holding pattern.

Benefits that are Obtained from Sports Massage Therapy

* Increased oxygen into the muscles and tissues.
*Increased elasticity of the muscles and tissues.
*Improves circulation, lengthens muscle fibers and removes toxins.
*A larger range of motion, greater stride and flexibility
*Pre-event  and post-event massage relaxes contracted muscles and reduces the chance of soft tissue damage and pulled tendons.
* Helps to relieve stress that may occur in horses that are being trailered and/or stalled a great deal of the time.
* Alleviates pain by helping to lessen the inflammation and swelling in joints.
