AVON3-DAY 2000
WELCOME!
 to Labar's Scrapbook of the...
AVON 3-Day Walk for Breast Cancer
June 16-18, 2000

60 miles... from Kenosha, Wisconsin to Chicago, Illinois
DAY 1
After registration day -- a LONG day of standing in even LONGER lines -- I shared a dorm room at Carthage College with fellow first-time walker Ann.  We discovered that we share the same college alma mater!  (Small world story #1.)  Here we posed briefly during early morning bus-loading... 5:45AM...  on our way to the 3-DAY starting line.
QUESTION:  How do over 3,000 people do warm-up stretches at the same time?
ANSWER:  Carefully!  (see below)
FIRST STEP!

3,136 walkers (3,049 female and 87 male) stepped off to loud fanfare and the cheers of family, friends, crew and volunteers.  After an initial bottleneck leaving the opening ceremony, walkers gradually lengthened into groups that stretched for miles, as each set their own pace.
STATE LINE

Our first big milestone was the Illinois State Line!  I'm pictured here with my Day-1 walker mate, Debbie.   Weather was perfect... clear, sunny and temps in the 70s.  Much of the way was along lovely woodland paths like this one, a real pleasure.
GARDEN STOP

"NO WILTING ALLOWED!!!
Please keep watering yourself!!!"

We were encouraged minute by minute -- by signs and cheering crew -- to hydrate ourselves.  Our success translated into the consumption of:

74,400 bottles of water
47,352 bottles of Gatorade
  1,152 bags of ice
  1,015 gallons of coffee
     650 gallons of orange juice
     400 gallons of milk
