Frequently Asked Questions
Most modern word processors contain auto-correction features which are turned on by default. These features include things such as:
Although these features can be useful, they usually do not work properly with languages other than the one your word processor was designed for (English, French, Spanish, or whatever your national languages is). In particular, they will give you undesirable results when typing with Geez Keyboard. The following paragraphs provide answers to some frequently asked questions and provide you instructions for turning these features off in various word processors and applications.
1. The following characters appear when you press Space or Enter.
These characters indicate a space or an end-of-paragraph in the screen display. They will not be printed. The following instructions will let you hide these indicators on the screen.
Microsoft Word
Choose "Options" from the Tools menu, and click the dialog Tab or icon labeled "View." Uncheck all options under "Nonprinting Characters."
Lotus WordPro
Choose "Set View Preferences" from the View menu, click the check box beside "Show marks," and uncheck "Tabs" and "Returns."
Microsoft Works
From the View menu, click on All characters to uncheck it
2. Your word processor changes certain letter sequences after you type them.
An automatic correction feature is probably enabled. Follow the instructions in Using Geez Keyboard with Word Processors to turn this feature off.

Choose "Options" from the Tools menu, click the tab labeled "Editing," and uncheck "Use smart quotes."
4. When importing text into PageMaker, some characters change.
When importing text, PageMaker normally tries to change regular quotation marks to typographical (curly) quotation marks. To fix this, click on the file you wish to import, then uncheck the box labeled "Convert quotes" under "Options."
5. When importing text into Ventura Publisher, some characters change.
This is the same problem discussed in item (4) above for PageMaker. You need to turn off "Typographer's quotations" (other applications call them smart quotes).
6. When you justify text in PageMaker, parts of some letters become separated.
You need to tell PageMaker to insert space between words only, not between letters. To do so, first press Ctrl+A to select the entire text. Now press Ctrl+M and choose Spacing. Under "Letter Spacing," change the value shown for "Maximum" to zero (0).
7. In WordPerfect 5.1, another font is substituted for the Geez font.
You need to tell WordPerfect to use Windows printer drivers. To do so, choose "Printer Setup" from the File menu. Select the printer you are using. Choose "Windows Drivers" at the bottom of the window. Choose "Update" and close the window. Also, be sure your Geez font has been installed properly.
