“Who We Are”

National Garden Clubs, Inc. provides education, resources and National networking opportunities for its members to promote the love of gardening, floral design, civic and environmental responsibility.   Maryland is a Charter Member of the National Garden Clubs, Inc.

The Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland offers members the opportunity to attend Courses in Gardening Study, Landscape Design, Environmental and Floral Design, which are organized study programs of our National Organization, but sponsored within our state.   Once a member completes these schools then they may join the respective Councils as “Consultants” to further their interest in the various fields.  The completion of the Flower Show Schools, and passing the entire student judging requirements, a member may become a Flower Show Judge.   The knowledge earned through these courses is passed on to the clubs by having Consultants provide programs and share their expertise to the general membership.

Individual clubs work with youth groups to spawn an early interest in horticulture, the environment and floral design.

Recognition of Community Projects is received through State Awards for Community Service, Civic Development and Historic Preservation.   An evaluated Flower Show meeting all the requirements may qualify for a National Award and non evaluated may be awarded a State Certificate of Recognition.   These Flower Shows are a means to educate the public, to stimulate an interest in horticulture, to provide an outlet of creative expression and to convey to the community objectives of NGC.   Scholarships are offered to applicants in the fields of Horticulture, Floriculture, Landscape Design, Botany, Forestry, Conservation, Agronomy, Plant Pathology, City Planning, Environmental Concerns and/or allied subjects.   These are 1-year scholarships.

We have a state publication, GARDENEWS, which is printed four times annually and is sent to all dues paying members.   Garden club memberships bring friendships, the enthusiasm of shared interests, and the networking of this knowledge on the state, regional and national levels!
