RECENT REVIEWS:
"Duende" -- the soul of inspiration -- was the title of the lively cross-cultural exploration presented by Ziva's Spanish Dance Ensemble Friday and Saturday at McLean's Alden Theater. The program did indeed take an honest stab of illuminating traditional Spanish dance more obscure roots and speculating about the fusions still to come.
With exciting choreography by founder and Director Ziva Cohen, and a lovely piece "La Vida Breve" by Alma Carmen Priego, the dancers enticed, strutted, sparkled and displayed their fine techinque, showmanship and love of life. Seguiriyas transported the audience around a Gypsie fire as Eloy Ybarra and Ziva, Alma (Priego) and Sharham Tehranian and members of the Ensemble intrigued us with the most serious of Gypsy dances.
On Saturday February 28th, in the Smith Theater of Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland, and a sold out concert, "Arte Flamenco" de Natalia Monteleon made their first public appearence . . . Alma C. Priego in her magnificent rendition of the Tangos, was the first dancer to receive a standing ovation.
When not performing, Ms. Priego teaches fine technique to students of all ages and levels. Over the years, Ms. Priego has conducted flamenco workshops for dance companies, professional dancers, and novice students. She also taught choreographies for Operas, Zarzuelas (light operas), and numerous Spanish dances and songs by famous composers.
