I got started with $5000.

Safety:

Basically You need a roll cage, fire system, fuel cell, and a fire suit. There is more but these are the big ticket items.

Roll Cage:

The roll cage is the first important item. It must be stiff for the weight you are putting in. You can achieve this by having it work together with the body of the car to obtain maximum stiffness with out adding excess tubes and weight.

The Suspension:

The suspension should be lowered. The cheapest way of doing this is by cutting down the springs. This will have two effects. 1) lower ride height and 2) higher roll stiffness. You need both of these.

The Engine:

The engine should have HO heads, flat top pistons and a Corvette LT-1 Style cam system with solid lifters. Mill the heads and match the ports. This will do until you make more improvements.

The Brakes:

You need some racing pads.

Tires
We use Hoosier because they offer the biggest tire that will fit on the 8" wide (restricted) rim. The biggest tire you can get is a Hoosier 275 45 R16. BFGoodrich and Goodyear offer 255 50 R15. The 275 45 is actually smaller in diameter than the 255 50 so it lets you lower the car further too. The key is that it is wider (almost half an inch). One Mustang driver said he could not run them because they hit the lip of the fender. We had this too, but the camaro has enough room to roll the inside lip of the fender in with out effecting the outside shape of the fender.
