The weather threatened misery, and thursday was chilly and damp, but friday and saturday were glorious October.
Five teams competed. The San Diego contigent showed up in the
sole personage of Scott Jordan, honorary Irishman and a credit to both.
Colorado was a Pennsylvanian county for the weekend, represented
by John Hupp.
We were very disappointed to hear at the last minute that the two
Malaysian squads had been denied visas to enter the US for their debut
with the IBPF. It is to be hoped that we will get another
opportunity to welcome Malaysia to the international cycle polo
community in the near future.
The
tournament was the first IBPF meet to be organized as a fund-raising
event for a charitable organization. It was organized to benefit SIGN
(Surgical Implant Generation Network),
a
non-profit corporation dedicated to creating
equality of fracture care throughout the world, and active,
incidentally, in Malaysia. SIGN provided use of their beautiful
new conference center in Richland Washington, and marvelous logistical
support for the awards banquet. Dr. Lew Zirkle of SIGN gave a
short presentation on the work of the remarkable organization he
founded, and conducted tours of the facility. Staff at the
Battelle Memorial Institute - Team Battelle provided hours of reliable,
competent and cheerful volunteer service to make the event a success.
Thanks in particular to Teresa Oliver, Andrea McMakin, Shirley Alderson, Norman Carr, Brenda Tagestad, Karen Wieda and Bonnie Baker.
Family members of the ABPA team pitched in with hours of
errand-running, food preparation and field-side volunteering.
Thanks from the IBPF and the ABPA to all these wonderful people!

Provisional
International Rules - The Provisional Rules were observed for the tournament, with a few minor exceptions.
It was proposed, and approved by all the teams, that unlimited
substitutions would be allowed whenever the ball was out of play and in
case of equipment problems. Protocol for stopping in the latter
case was inconsistent in practice, but nobody took great advantage of a
disablement. All agreed that the experiment was successful -
everyone got to play more than was usual under the more restrictive
substitution rules, and the level of sportsmanship was generally higher
as players weren't as fatigued and sloppy as has sometimes been the
case.
For the seeding
Round Robin section of the meet, matches of two 7.5 minute
chukkers were conducted, with the clock running continuously.
This enabled us to run ten matches in one day to seed teams
having little or no prior contact.
