FREEDOMQUEST ALTERNATIVE
"Supporting Homeschool Diversity"
MISSION STATEMENT:
FreedomQuest Alternative is a diverse secular support group whose members homeschool for many different reasons including academic, religious, philosophical and medical.  Given the diversity in our membership, we respect each family's right to choose the homeschooling methods which work best for them as well as the right to discuss those choices openly while at the same time not imposing those methods upon others.
FREEDOM to DREAM, to LIVE, to BE YOU!
ABOUT US:
This is a support group for homeschooling families with children who are primarily 13 years and younger.  The purpose of this group is to provide social, emotional and educational support for parents and educational trips and social/play time for children.  Families experiencing special circumstances such as chronic illnesses, learning differences, developmentally-delayed/special needs children, etc., are encouraged to join.  Discussions, trips and special events are organized throughout the year.  A resources lending library is offered.  Regular meetings are usually held in Medford, NJ, on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month at 1:30 PM.
FREEDOM to RELAX, to PLAY, to HAVE FUN!
ABOUT GROUP FOUNDER:
Hi, my name is Stacy and I'm a relaxed/eclectic homeschooling mom from NJ.  I've been a volunteer on the Burlington County helpline for the statewide Unschoolers Network for the last 7 years.  I also coordinate special circumstances homeschooling issues for the Network on a statewide basis.
RESOURCE REVIEW OF THE MONTH:
The Everything Tween Book: A Parent's Guide to Surviving the Turbulent Preteen Years by Linda Sonna, Ph.D., New York, New York, Scholastic, Inc., 2003.
This book is an excellent resource for gaining an understanding of the often perplexing tween years.  The author offers much insight into the workings of the tween mind and offers numerous useful suggestions on dealing with all aspects of tween life.  A good amount of the book discusses how our behavior as parents affects tweens not only today but for a lifetime.  The author offers practical strategies for more effective parenting.  Some of the areas that the author discusses are less worrisome for homeschooling parents but nonetheless are areas in which we should be familiar since most of our children have friends who attend traditional schools and face the issues discusssed which, of course, influences their interactions with our children.
