IN RETROSPECT, 1ST LIFE
When Mom didn't have anyone who cared,
Mrs. Fountain came through; she was always there,
She treated me as if I were her own,
A person like her Mom had never known.
As I recall, when I was a child,
She fed me, she loved me, she made me smile,
And although there were six of her own to raise,
She was filled with life and love and praise.
I can remember at the age of seven,
There was this lady sent from heaven,
And even though she didn't admit to a Christ,
The lady was good and very nice.
She came into my life when I was feeling low,
She lifted me up and made me glow,
To her I was good and special and smart,
She knew the truth right from the start.
Because of her, I discovered myself,
Thank you, Mrs. Weiner, for your help.
And then there was Sister Benedict,
She led the choir without a stick,
She took me in when I was out of sound,
In second alto, Valerie and I were bound.
Now Sister was loving and warm and kind,
And Valerie was a first best friend of mine,
They both gave me a chance to be what I could,
What a wonderful feeling to be understood.
Thanks to you both, you are special indeed,
You were right there for me when I was in need.
I remember up on the second floor,
There was Portia and her mom, Mrs. Moore,
They made me feel part of a whole,
A story of love that was never told.
In the Scouts, I learned many things,
It was there I earned my first pair of wings,
We made people smile wherever we went,
We shared our love, our joy, and talent.
You gave me the choice to be like no other,
Thank you, Martha, Mrs. Ruiz, and Mother.
While reading "Great Expectations" in class,
Mr. Hansen was hard, wanting me to pass,
He lent me the want and desire to read,
You'll be happy to know your word I did heed.
And Elaine De was a special friend of mine,
When I was in trouble, she had the time,
She told the truth, no matter the pain,
Not a word or a gesture was ever in vain.
I hope each one remembers these wonderful days,
They were special to me in many ways,
When life was hard, you helped me to cope,
By lending yourselves, your love, your hope.
And even though you're not near me today,
I give thanks to God for you when I pray,
You opened your hearts and offered your hands,
I'll love you always, no matter how far apart we stand.
