Friends of the Great Western Trail
ENJOY the Great Western Trails
National Trails day is always in early June & Bike Day is designated in late June but try and make every day Trails & Bike days. To support these trails and safe use for bikes EVERYday please checkout the League of IL Bicyclists www.lib.org and learn about the recent pending legislation to help us be able to travel safely and in a healthy manner by getting out from behind a steering wheel.
The Great Western Trail (GWT) in north central DuPage County is a nearby  resource for you and our neighboring communities. Walkers, Runners, Bicyclists, Equestrians, etc, are welcome to use the 11 and 1/2 mile trail all year around. The trails runs relatively flat and wide (see photo of trail looking west from Swift Rd.) with long stretches without side street interruptions. Enjoy the nice and easy to cross bridge over I-355 the North-South Tollway, see photos below. The GWT connects with the IL Prairie Path (IPP) at the Elgin Branch on the west and in the East it starts one block north of the IPP at Villa Ave.
There is another Great Western Trail in Kane County which offers a more rural landscape and ride environment. There are many major recreational facilities and amenities in several communities along both of these trails. Note the trails are cleaned by volunteers all year around, see the newsarticle and photo below. Please help us and remove any lunch wrappers and drink bottles you bring in with you. Thanks! Go to these sites for a trail map of the GWT, IPP and Fox River Trail  and the Kane County Great Western Trail map here.
SPEAK OUT NOW and be very happy you
saved over 340 very old trees and a wildlife habitat!
As you may be aware, during the early part of 2008, the Glen Ellyn Park District plans to destroy more than 340 very old trees and a wildlife habitat in Ackerman Park.
HERE ARE THE FACTS:
A 2-acre wooded tract of over 340 old growth native trees in Glen Ellyn, IL at
Ackerman Park will be cut down to create a water detention basin to allow for more
stores to be built on the northwest corner at Glen Ellyn and Geneva Rds. This is part
of an inter-governmental agreement between the Village of Glen Ellyn and the Park
District. The current detention area adjoining Walgreen’s will be filled with soil and will
be sold by the Village to a commercial developer to create more retail space at the
intersection. But there are plenty of empty stores available in Glen Ellyn now.

Although the Park District lists the 2 acres of trees as a part of 20 wooded acres at
Ackerman Park, the remaining acres actually consist of scattered trees, many of
which are undesirable, invasive varieties, which are around the perimeters of the park.
There is not a contiguous 20-acre woodland. But there is a beautiful 2 acre woodland "Ackerman Woods" that they want to destroy.

Along with a few native burr oaks, the 2-acre woods includes many desirable native trees, such as walnut, black cherry, American elm, ash and cottonwood, all of which are varieties that do well in areas that are periodically wet.. The woods have been left alone for decades but they are surprisingly healthy. Only minimal work would be needed to restore these woods to their natural condition.
The Park District plans to use the detention area where these trees
