![]() Dancing La Bamba
Dancers practicing “La Bamba” at the 1998 Second Annual Festival of the Pueblos Negros, at Ciruelo, on the Pacific Costa Chica in the state of Oaxaca. The dancers are on an African sound box, which is called an “artesa” along the Oaxaca and state of Guerrero coast. In the highlands the sound box is called a “tarima” and very large ones are used by the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico. The traditional “African” box shown here has a turtle head at one end. One of the dancers is sitting upon the head. Photo is by Ron Wilkens of Los Angeles. He lead a contingent of Los Angeles area teenagers to the festival. |
