The Dark Virgin

The Virgin de Guadalupe is known as the "virgin moreno," the dark virgin. She is said to be the patrona saint of Indigenous Mexico. During the late colonial period her likeness was widely recreated, typically in the form shown here. Her "moreno" countenance contrasts with the white/yellow of the cheribs that surround her.

Politically, the Virgin de Guadalupe was the initial flag of the 1810 "ejercito moreno", the independence army of Father Miguel Hidalgo. He marched out of his town of Dolores that first day of revolt in a procession led by six priests, the lead of which carried the banner of the Virgin on a flag pole.
