Groundhog Day Funology

The Origin of Groundhog Day dates back to the early German settlers and their superstition relating to crop planting. As the superstition goes, hibernating animals would come out of their winter homes to observe the weather on this day. If the animal, specifically a groundhog, would see the sun, his own shadow would frighten him back into his winter home. If the ground hog came out on a cloudy day, he would stay above ground and spring would soon arrive. Each year people from all over travel to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to watch with great anticipation to see if Phil, the most famous groundhog makes his way above ground to check on the weather.
