Hanukkah Funology December 22 - 29, 2000
Hanukkah is an 8 day holiday that commemorates the victory of an unarmed group of Jewish soldiers led by Judah Macabee over the larger well armed Syrians and Greeks. This holiday known as the Festival of Lights also celebrates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. Hanukkah begin on the 25th day of Kislev, in the third month of the lunar year. This joyous festival is celebrated in both the home and synagogue. Each night candles are lit in a menorah which traditionally is set in a window for all to see. The candle lighting symbolizes the miracle of the lamp oil which was used in the refurbishing of the Temple. Celebrations of this holiday include gift exchanges, games, songs and traditionally foods cooked in oil. Crafts and Activities:
