Martin Luther King, Jr. Funology

January 21, 2002

Born on January 15, 1929, Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Baptist minister who facilitated the nonviolent civil rights movement. His leadership and his dream of equality won him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. On April 4, 1968 Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. The celebration of his birth became a National Holiday in 1986. In many cities across the country the holiday is celebrated through special cultural programs, community marches and prayer services in an effort to bring his dream closer to reality.
