Flaming Ball
Early 1970's
by Norman Gagnon
In my early teens, I would often spend weeks with my cousin during my summer vacations, often exploring the country side as we rode our bikes on the area dirt roads.
During one mid afternoon, we were peddling back to his house from an area lake and I then suddenly noticed what seems to be a bright fireball that appeared to be burning on the top of a utility pole. As I tried to point this event out to him, an extremely loud explosion occurred, almost knocking us off our bikes!
At first, we thought the loud blast was caused by lightning strike but the sky was sunny and clear. We looked at and near the pole to see if there were smoke or a small crater on the ground but none was found. The top of the pole and related components did not show any signs of damage either, so we got on our bikes and headed towards the house, which was about a quarter of a mile away. When we arrived, we told his mom about what happened and we also checked the lights and the television to see if they would turn on, and they worked fine.
Today, I still think about this strange incident that occurred many summers ago. If a malfunctioning transformer did explode, we would have seen signs of damage and smoke, and I also believe that the area homes would have sustained an outage as well. Perhaps it was a rare “lightning ball” that landed on this pole but yet again, the sky was clear and pleasant. This was another sighting that I chalked up to another weird vacation at my cousin’s farmhouse.
