A dark time, 1967. We were fighting the North Vietnamese, the Chinese, the Russians, and many Americans too. It was a time to grow up, face the real world. John Wayne was dead. We learned anger, grief, and fear.

After a few months of this kind of "sport flying," it was a vast change to bed rest in a military hospital, and then return to the peacetime military with its mundane worries such as haircuts and dress regulations. The political climate was about as inspiring as watching paint dry. America the Beautiful had become an old hag.

Now, America has taken a new face. The peaceniks are few, and getting old. Most cheer at the war that is now in progress, as I do. I would like to be at the controls of "Terrible Tina" once more, and be kicking ass in ragland. I have to be content with my cane and wobbly legs. Only my words can express the feelings of a retired warrior. Read them in "The River Rat."
