Vahl (Female Human High Priestess of Thor)
Vahl was born to human parents in a small village. She was orphaned, at the age of six, after a wagon accident killed her parents. Dyana, Vahl's aunt, agreed to raise her niece if she could continue her study and devotions to Thor. Dyana was a young cleric to the god of thunder, Thor. She asked the high priestess of her order, the Sisterhood of Thor, to admit Vahl as a student. The high priestess was reluctant, at first, to allow one so young to join their order. Thirteen was the youngest girl ever admitted to their order. After some pleading from Dyana, and a talk with Vahl, the high priestess agreed. Vahl was raised by her aunt Dyana and the Sisterhood of Thor. Vahl learned to read and write the common language of the land. She also learned the arts of healing and herbalism from her "sisters." The Sisterhood of Thor was secluded and Vahl had to learn to hunt and fish to do her part in keeping the order self sufficient. She spent time studying the religion as well. Many of the sisters in the sisterhood were physically strong women. Vahl didn't measure up in the area of strength and was considered one of the lesser clerics. The lesser clerics were able to cast spells from all of the clerical spheres but were not granted the special powers that Thor bestowed upon those who met Thor's stringent requirements. Vahl was not awfully upset at the prospect of being a lesser cleric, she had apparently gained beauty instead of strength. By the time Vahl had reached nineteen, she had long flowing blonde hair to complement her bright blue eyes. Working with her sisters had toned her five-foot nine-inch body to an efficient 118 pounds. She had learned to use several weapons in defense of their order. Because she had started her training so young, Vahl became the youngest sister of the order to ever rise to the level of high priestess. A year later her adoptive mother, Dyana, died in a battle against a raiding band of ogres. After Dyana's death, Vahl was compelled to seek knowledge outside of the sisterhood. She had risen to a respected position in her sisterhood but began to stagnate. The highest priestess, now an old and wise matron, had recognized the signs of dissatisfaction in Vahl. She had seen it in others and knew what had to be done. Vahl was released of her duties in the sisterhood and sent into the wilds to find her life's course. As customarily done in these cases, Vahl was given minimum rations, weaponry, and funds when she left. If she were to survive, it would be by Thor's graces and her own wits. Vahl left the sisterhood at the age of twenty. She traveled in the wilderness for weeks. She'd exhausted her rations after only two days and had survived only on her knowledge of hunting, fishing, and herbalism. She had decided to not call upon Thor for her survival. She wanted to survive on her own. Thor, apparently, smiled on her for her efforts. Her journey held little resistance and it was not long until she came to a town. In the town is where she made her first friend outside of the sisterhood. She ran into this friend while she was purchasing armor from the town's armorer. Her friend's name was Tonya and she seemed so full of life. Tonya convinced Vahl to seek adventures with her. When Vahl questioned about how to find adventure, Tonya suggested one of the local taverns. Player's Note: This was apparently the DM's joke on the two male players who decided to play female characters. This was my first female character. The tavern was having some sort of contest and Tonya thought the two of them should enter. Vahl reluctantly agreed. When the night of the contest arrived, Vahl and Tonya arrived at the tavern. That's when Vahl learned that she'd have to parade in front of the patrons of the tavern. Worse yet, she'd have to do it with very few clothes on. Vahl was appalled. This was no scene befitting a high priestess of Thor. She refused to carry on like some alley tramp. Tonya talked her into it anyway. Tonya explained that this was a beauty contest. If Thor didn't want her to partake then she assured that he'd give her a sign. There came no sign to Vahl. Tonya assured her that her beauty should be used to her advantage. Vahl reluctantly decided to go through with the contest. There was a considerable sum for the winners and she could use the money to get equipment. To Vahl's surprise, she and Tonya took second and third place, respectively. Fifty pieces of gold were Vahl's winnings. She received them as she was donning her chain mail in the back rooms of the tavern. Tonya came back and announced that she'd run into some adventurers out front. She said that they were looking for some hearty people to join them. Vahl returned with Tonya to the front of the tavern. There she met this adventuring party. They had been tasked to find a displacer beast in some far off land. She and Tonya agreed to aid them in their quest. This crew of adventurers included Marpal, Cosmo (a magic user), Lenny (a dolt of a fighter), Houdini (a magic user), Dorial (a female fighter), Tonto (a male ranger), and Eldridge. Player's Note: Quick summaries due to the length of time between this text and the actual events. Adventures in Greyhawk after which Vahl split with the above mentioned people and went her own way. Adventure to find the crook of Rowe for the mage Tenser. This adventure was with Garbo (cleric), Sif (fighter/cleric), Brant (ranger/mage), and Bedivere (paladin) in the Amedio jungle. Vahl died and was resurrected. She saw Garbo and Sif using clerical magic far beyond her own abilities. Vahl tried to call upon Thor's favor but was not worthy of such great consideration by Thor. When they returned, less than a month from the time they had left, two years had lapsed and Tenser had been murdered by Rary the traitor. Time was obviously different in the Amedio jungle than it was on Greyhawk. They were allowed to keep all items except the crook of Rowe. Vahl learned that she could gain better protection through magic than she could with most armor. She kept her plate mail, however, just in case. Adventure with Houdini, Stumred the condescending dwarven fighter, Aurora the fighter, Baldar the fighter/rogue, and his trusty aid Rube, the fighter. Accidentally killed Rube when she transmuted hundreds of feet of rock to mud during a battle with dark-skinned elves. The transmutation caused a mud slide that buried Rube's sleeping body. He suffocated and drown in the mud. Vahl felt horrible that she'd caused his death. She immediately insisted that she raise him from the dead. Also in the battle with the dark, or drow, elves, her Staff of Striking was lost when it was knocked from her hands and it fell onto the rocks some sixty feet below. Vahl reasoned that it was Thor's way of bringing her back to his weapon, the warhammer. Then she lost her bracers and armor battling rust monsters. She lost her shield and rope of entanglement when captured by mind flayers. Vahl and Aurora ate people, for food, when they were captured and controlled by the mind flayers. Vahl now has a major aversion to mind flayers. Vahl and her party had poor luck against a deep dragon. They had attempted to sneak into the dragon's lair by encompassing themselves with a silence spell. Instead, they were surprised from behind by the dragon. Its first attack nearly killed Vahl. The dragon's acid breath swept over Vahl like a cloud of death. Rube was almost overcome as well as Houdini. Rube managed to bind the unconscious Vahl's wounds and keep her from slipping into death's grasp. He then attacked the dragon. Baldar moved over and delivered a healing potion to Vahl's lips. She returned to consciousness as Rube pulled her away from the battle. She summoned Morik, the djinn of her ring. She instructed Morik to aid Aurora, who was caught in mud transmuted beneath her feet by the dragon, and follow her directions. Aurora told Morik to put her on the dragon's back and then help the fallen Stumred. Morik deposited Aurora to the dragon's back and moved to retrieve Stumred. Before he got to the dwarf, the dragon blasted Morik with his acidic breath. Morik died a death that Vahl herself almost faced. She thanked Thor for sparing her life. Baldar, Houdini, and Aurora finished the dragon with Aurora dealing the final blow from its back. Stumred was brought forth. His lifeless body showed no sign of ever regaining life. Vahl would have to raise him from the dead. Before the thought finished leaving her lips, Baldar reminded her of his ring. She had stored a spell for raising the dead in his ring after Rube had died. Baldar cast the spell and Stumred was restored to life. His brush with death left a permanent scar on his body, however. Vahl noticed it and knew that his performance as a fighter would suffer from such a scar. Vahl felt the tingling still on the side of her face. She removed a mirror from her girdle. She choked back her tears when she saw her reflection. The side of her face had been scarred from the acid breath of the dragon. Her eyes teared but she fought to keep the tears from leaving her eyes. She strategically positioned her blonde hair to cover the hideous scar. Someone announced that they found some scrolls. Vahl composed herself and examined those that Houdini couldn't decipher. One had a regeneration spell on it. The spell of regeneration was beyond Vahl's capabilities in her service to Thor. She had seen the effects of such godly magic and knew that the spell of regeneration would make the skin of her face smooth again. She could have her beauty restored. But what of Stumred? He'd stood toe-to-toe with the dragon, a beast one hundred times his size. When it came to choosing items, Vahl decided to choose the regeneration scroll as her first choice. A rod of resurrection was her second choice and armor enhancements were chosen afterward. After the selection process was completed, she quickly unrolled the scroll of regeneration and began to cast it. As she came to the end of the incantation, she touched her hand to… Stumred. The valiant dwarf deserved at least that much. Perhaps it would help to change his condescending attitude toward her. Perhaps not. Regardless, Thor had made it clear to her that beauty was not one of his priorities.
Adventure for the figurines of wondrous power. After retrieving all of the figurines, the party combined them and released a god. The god granted each of them a wish. Vahl wished for the wisdom to better serve Thor. Player's Note: Because the released god was a friend of Thor's, he not only granted her wish for wisdom, but increased her wisdom by 4. This took Vahl from a wisdom of 16 to a wisdom of 20. The god-granted powers that she had seen Garbo and Sif wield were now available to her. So was the spell of regeneration. Vahl refuses to use the power of Thor on her acid scarred face, however. The scar is a reminder of her own vain shortcomings. | |||||||||||
