First Holy Communion

When Pope Pius X became Pope, one of his first thoughts was not only to feed little children with bread, but also to feed their souls with the Body and Blood of Jesus, their Lord and God, under the appearance of bread, in Holy Communion.  Many in the Church objected to this, but he loved children and he loved Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament so much that he wanted them to frequently embrace each other in Holy Communion, as a child embraces its beloved mother.  He wanted children to be allowed to receive Jesus as soon as they knew enough catechism to understand that our dear Lord and God comes to them in Holy Communion.

One day an English lady had her four year old son with her at a private visit with Pope Pius X.  The Pope stooped down to the little boy and asked him:
     "How old are you?"
"I am four," said the boy.
Then the Holy Father continued: "Whom do you receive in Holy Communion?"
"Jesus Christ," answered the little fellow.
"And who is Jesus Christ?" inquired the Pope.
"Jesus Christ is God," was the boy's immediate answer.

The Pope was delighted and turned to the mother and said: "Bring your boy to me tomorrow and I will give him his first Communion myself."

On the First Holy Communion certificate above is the picture of that same Holy Father leading you, dear First Communicant, to the altar rail.

Prayers to the Christ Child

Dear Child Jesus, I humbly ask Thee to help me in all my dealings with my parents and teachers so that I may follow faithfully the example given by Thee during Thy visit with the Doctors in the Temple.  Grant, dear Child Jesus, that I may ask them questions in a respectful manner and drink in their lessons of wisdom with humility and gratitude.  I beg Thee to make me always willingly obedient to my dear parents as Thou wert obedient to Thy gentle Mother, our Blessed Lady, so that all I do may bring consolation and happiness to them, and greater honor and glory to Thee, my God and my All.
O Little Jesus, I have recourse to Thee.  I firmly believe that Thy Divinity can protect me.  I confidently hope to obtain Thy holy grace.  I love Thee with all my heart and all my soul.
I am sincerely sorry for my sins and beseech Thee, O Little Jesus, to deliver me from them, I resolve to amend and nevermore to offend Thee.  I offer myself to suffer much and patiently for Thee.  Moreover, I want to serve Thee always faithfully, and to love my neighbor as myself, with all my heart for Thee.
O Little Child Jesus, I adore Thee, O powerful Child, I pray Thee, keep me from all evil, that I may enjoy Thee eternally, behold Thee with Mary and Joseph, and adore Thee with all the Angels.  Amen.
Prayer Before Holy Communion

Come Holy Ghost and help me to realize whom I receive in Holy Communion.  Help me to realize that it is my Jesus, who, though He is God and Man, was always obedient until he was a grown up Man.  Jesus, because He loves me and wishes to come to me, hides Himself under a little bread.
Help me, Dear Jesus, to be always good enough to receive You in Holy Communion often.  I want to be near You.  I want to be with You.  Jesus, I love You and I repent of ever having offended You.
Amen.
Prayer Before an Image of a Crucifix (After Holy Communion)

Look down upon me, good and gentle Jesus, while before Thy face I humbly kneel, and with burning soul pray and beseech Thee to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity, true contrition for my sins and a firm purpose of amendment; while I contemplate Thy five wounds, pondering over them within me, and calling to mind the words which David, Thy prophet, said of Thee, my good Jesus: "They have pierced My hands and My feet; they have numbered all my bones."
(Plenary Indulgence each time, if recited after Holy Communion with prayers for the Pope's intentions.)
