DISEASE TREATMENT

       For EXTREMITY Leiomyosarcoma and other SOFT TISSUE SARCOMA of the extremities

 

For LUNG METS -
 Surgery, radiation and systemic treatment (chemo or other systemic treatment) are the common treatment for lung metastases - usually the most life threatening progression of metastatic sarcoma of the extremity .  You can do a search (Medline, PubMed, etc.) for sarcoma + lung metastases, and some searching will find you: 
  • Surgery (called resection) 

  • Isolated lung perfusion with resection 

  • Video assisted lung surgery 

  • Laser surgery 

  • Cryosurgery
There is also a lot of experience with surgery for lung metastases in the L-M-Sarcoma and Sarcoma On-Line mail lists).  Also search specifically for Dr. Bains (MSKCC), Dr. Benjamin (MDACC), Dr. Brennan (MSKCC), Dr. Harvey (Beth Israel, NYC), Dr. Johnson (University of Pittsburgh Hospital),  Dr. Roth (MDACC), Japan Cancer Center (laser surgery).

      For ABDOMINAL LMS, LIVER Metastases
 

 

 For treatment of SYSTEMIC DISEASE - prevention and treatment of recurrence and/or metastases, including lung metastases  - sarcoma / solid tumors

  • LaDonna Backmeyer's experience in Steve Dunn's page, or through the L-M-Sarcoma List.
  • Also - Dr. David Berd's vaccine (Kimmel Cancer Center, Philadelphia - M-VAX, O-VAX 
  	AVAX Technologies) has been tested successfully in
    	Phase II trials for melanoma and ovarian cancer (survival rates
    	for Stage III melanoma increased from 25% to near 50%). 
  
      	According to Dr. Berd, there is no reason this vaccine shouldn't work in
      	any solid tumor.
