What is GLO?

In keeping with its mission of helping all people with ostomies, the United Ostomy Association in 1982 established the Gay and Lesbian Concerns Committee, now called Gay and Lesbian Ostomates (GLO) Committee. The committee works to assist Gay men and women live more positively with an ostomy.
The primary goals of GLO are to:
Address unique needs of Gay ostomates;
Assist healthcare professionals and UOA volunteers in serving Gay ostomates;
Provide information about resources for Gay ostomates and their caregivers.
Resources:
A web site for the Gay or Bisexual ostomate;
A newsletter for the Gay or Bisexual ostomate;
A network of gay men and women ostomates and supportive others who offer mutual aid and support through telephone or personal contact;
Informal discussion and social groups for Gay and Bisexual ostomates and their friends in some cities; and
Informational programs and social events for Gay and Bisexual ostomates at UOA regional and national conferences.
Needs and Concerns of Gay and Lesbian Ostomates:
Gay and lesbian ostomates, like all people with diversionary procedures, are confronted with a variety of concerns during their recovery. These concerns are universal throughout the ostomy community and can pertain to diet, odor, ability to work, the enjoyment of recreational activities, relationships and the reactions of loved ones.
Many gay men and lesbians are concerned with actual, perceived or anticipated prejudice they may experience. Therefore, many are reluctant to reveal their affectional or sexual orientations to health professionals and ostomy visitors. This limits the effectiveness of the caregiver, particularly where intimacy and sexuality issues are concerned.
